Vienna hotels

We will be stopping in Vienna for only one night on our way from Florence to Krakow. We're looking for a centrally located hotel in the 3 star range. Would anyone have a name or two to help narrow my search? We won't have a car, so location is important. Other than seeing the palace, and going to a concert at the Musikverein, we'll be mainly strolling the streets, so I'm looking for a hotel in the central district, or one that is accessible by public transport. Thank you for any ideas!

We went to the Klimpt's Women retrospective in January of 2001 and stayed at the SAS (an excellent hotel) which was on the edge of the Ringstrasse. Two or three blocks from the center pedestrian area and half a block to the metro. Taxis are not too expensive, the metro is not the best but will take you places. The hotel is 4 or 5 stars, but they have good deals in the winter, I booked it on the internet, can't remember if it is a Ramada. I know I did it directly with the hotel, but ahead of time, otherwise it will be very expensive. I think we paid like $130 per night. I found Vienna to be on the expensive side, more than Paris, but it is worth every penny, you should consider adding a day if you can. The palace is beautiful. We went to see Mozart, the musical and it was awsome, the language was no barrier. The Sunday morning mass with the Boys Choir is spectacular, what gifted children. If you like Art Nouveau (Secessionist in Vienna) then you are really in for a treat. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

My favorite place in Vienna -- the Konig von Ungarn, a delightful small hotel (but may be a four, not a three star). Great breakfasts included and really nice rooms. It is right next to the "Mozart House" and less than half a block from the cathedral, and the subway.

Sorry, I left off the website for Konig von Ungarn: www.kvu.at

Good evening, Peggy
Have used the HOTOEL MAILBERGERHOF, Annagasse, 7, it is a three star with 102 rooms. Have used it a number of times over the last 20 years and have
been satisified with the Hootel, its
staff. Is locted just off of the
Kartnerstrasse about two blocks down from the Oper Haus...Plenty of good
ristorantss around. Richard of LaGrange Park,Il..

VerSacrum is referring to the Radisson, which has some very nice rooms and some with dodgier taste (over the top glitz) and bad beds - it is split in two halves, the dodgier taste half was renovated before the other half. Having lived in Vienna for 2 years until June and having visited Paris a couple of times in the past 12 mths, I certainly could not agree with VS's cost reference (nor reference to underground - while not covering quite the same distance as say Munich or London, the frequency is excellent).
I recommend Starlight Suites in Renngasse (euro160 rack rate, I got 100 for Feb - direct with hotel), www.starlighthotels.com. New rooms, modernly furnished and offers proper lounge room (2 seater sofa + 2 chairs - all black leather to give a feel)+ decent bedroom+ tiny kitchenette - so far more room for money than standard hotels.
KVH which Patrick recommends does have charm but do not offer discounts - so do not bother looking for one. It means if you go for peak time and get a room, their 180 rate is good. At low times where lots of hotels are offering discounts, 180 is steep.
Mailbergerhof is a fairly standard 3 star hotel in Vienna - nice building, good location but a bit dated inside.

The Hotelpension Arenberg is a 4* Best Western within the Ring. It has that posh Vienna feel but not that expensive and breakfast includes homemade muslei. My room had a nice balcony and included bath/shower/toilet. The U-Bahn is a 2-minute walk and Stephensplatz maybe 5 minutes.
The other is Hotel Drei Kronen, 3*, excellent buffet breakfast and just outside the Ring near the University. You have a 3-4 minute walk to the U-Bahn and about 7 minutes to the Opera. There is a nice open market across the street and a grocery store in the next block.
