Vienna Hotel Mate Dependance
 

Has anyone stayed in this hotel in Vienna or heard anything about it? I searched the Fodor's site and did not find anything. My travel agent booked us here for a stay in late May. From my research I am not getting a good sense of how far it is or how easy it will be to get to the city center. We enjoy exploring cities on foot. We use metros a lot but would like to not have to always rely on them when going out to dinner.
Our travel agent booked us into a fantastically located hotel in Amsterstam last year (and decent choices before in Florence and Venice) so I felt comfortable with the company's choice this time. But now...I am not sure.
Any info would be appreciated.

This hotel is supposedly in the 17th district.

Good luck on your trip - Vienna is a wonderful place.

Your travel agent should tell you how far it is away from major landmarks/ attractions and also how far from subway/tram stops.

If they don't have the info (and they should since it would be a key hotel selection factor), they can email or call the hotel to find out.

Just because they did a good job for one city doesn't mean they will automatically get it right for all of them.

Sorry, but I would insist on a hotel in the 1st District or at least somewhere adjacent to the Ringstrasse close to the city center. Vienna does have great transportation, but why spend half of your vacation getting to the sites, when there are plenty of very reasonable hotels in the center?

I did a google search and turned up a bunch of hits on it. Looks like you are a ways out of the city center. Here's one blurb I copied:

This is not a convenient location in Vienna.I agree with bettyk that you should ask for a more convenient hotel.The hotel itself may be good and carry a good price but the 17th district is not the best location for you. The hotel is probably near the corner of Bergsteiggasse and Ottakringerstrasse.I believe the closest public transport is the streetcar44. The hotel is at least 7-8 stops from the Ring where you must then change to getmost places. The metro is called the " U-bahn" in Vienna . the closest stop is AlserStrasse of U-6 ( not Alberstrasse as mentioned) Perhaps more of a problem would be easy access to good restaurants. You would probably not find many in that area. Travel back to the hotel later in the evening when time intervals increase between streetcars would also not be good.
Book another hotel!
Many good and not too expensive hotels can be found within walking distance of the most visited tourist places in Vienna.One of the greatest things about Vienna is the ability to explore on foot.
