Vienna for 2 days
 

Going to be in Vienna for 2 days on our way to Greece. Just want to wander, see the sights and have some good food. Looking for ideas of what we should see and great restaurants. We don't want anything high end but places for a good lunch, afternoon tea and dinner would be helpful. Anything we should not miss. We are staying at Pension Suzanne after reviews from this sight. Thanks for your help.

We've been to Austria last year and spent two days in Vienna.

The Hotel Riviera (which is a restaurant, not a hotel) is my favorite, mid-priced restaurant in Vienna. The food is good, it's attractively decorated and does not get many tourists. It's closed Sundays and does not take any credit cards (as the restaurant says, "no plastic food, no plastic money"). Within an easy walk from St. Stephan's cathedral.

For pastries, I still think the best in central Vienna can be found at Oberlaa and you can get tea there, of course.

The Siftskeller St Peter is the oldest restaurant in Austria. It dates from about 800 A.D. It is a DO NOT MISS. It is next to St Peter's Church in Salzburg. Be sure to have the "to die for" peach souffle.

There are two other things I did while I was in Salzburg that I considered a "do not miss":

I took the tour of the Hohensalzburg (the fortress up on the hill).

I went to the Nonnburg (the convent where Maria von Trapp was a novitiate).

Do not miss - I almost never say that (too much variation in personal preferences) but in this case I really think it applies: the Hofburg Treasury, with audioguide. Excellent explanations on the symbolism of the pieces.

We also enjoyed just walking around enjoying the architecture, which is very varied.

For a nice and casual restaurant in Vienna, I really liked Do & Co, right on the same square as St Stephen's Cathedral. They offered a variety of food, from traditional Viennese to sushi. The building it's in is very modern and interesting in itself. Ask for a table facing the cathedral--it makes for an interesting contrast.

be sure to have afternoon tea or hot chocolate and pastry at Demel.

My wife and I were their last Oct. My favorite city! Just walking around the city is amazing! Hofburg palace, I can't believe people actually lived like that! Go to Schonbrunn. The greatest Italian place-Daconte over by Judenplatz, just ask
