Vienna - coffee lovers - what's your favourite?

I've read that there are many ways to order one's coffee in Vienna, from extemely light to deepest black.

What's your favourite kind? And what's your favourite accompaniment?

Here at home we love good, strong coffee with lovely cream. Looking forward to having same in Vienna next month. Of course I will also be having plenty of schlagobers too! And the odd pastry....

Pop into Starbucks and just get the brew of the day.

Our favorite is a "Großer Brauner"

This link describes the choices, and shows they way coffee is served in Austria:

I think the best coffee I've ever tasted (and at home I'm known as a coffee snob) was at the Sacher Hotel. The Sacher torte wasn't any better than what I get at Safeway, but the coffee was superb.

well, in my opinion, the question is, which coffeehouse.

as they are all the meetingplaces of a different clientele.

never have been to Cafe Hawelka - a favourite meetingplace of artists - but, well, next time.

Thank you Liz, for your link. You see, they take this item for serious in Vienna...

Even people who normally turn their noses up at Starbucks were flocking around the Karntnerstrasse branch yesterday afternoon. It has been unseasonably warm (really warm) and sunny so Starbucks sent some of their staff out in front of the store with trays full of free mini frappuccinos. They were swarmed by tourists and locals alike!

i know Vienna is the home of the coffee house or at least i think it is and has great java

but a bit funny, on a recent train trip to Italy in my couchette were two young Italian students who said how awful the coffee was in Vienna - could not wait to get back to italy for some real coffee!

I'm with the Italian students on this one. I found the coffee in Vienna to be okay, but coffee in Italy is usually very good indeed.
