Vienna/Airport Bus Question
If I take the airport bus to Westbahnhof, will I be able to get a cab to my hotel (The Bristol)from there. I'll have too much luggage to transfer the train. Thanks.

Me again.. Is it actually the City Air Terminal I want to go to? How far is it from The Bristol? Anyone know? Thanks again!!!

Flyer,
I was in Vienna in May and was planning on taking the high speed train to Westbahnhof. I was told that I could take a cab from there. I ended up taking a bus that let off very near my hotel, so I didn't actually go that way. However, I saw taxis all around every bus and train station in Vienna. It is a very easy city to get around. |
Why don't you take a shuttle van that drops you off directly at the Bristol? I've used them to go from the airport to the (ANA) Grand, which is a few doors down from the Bristol, and also to the Intercontinental. The cost is about 15 euros one way.
The shuttle service desk is easy to spot at Vienna's airport...it has a bright Hundterwasser decor (cobalt blue pillars, vividly colored tiles). |
The advice of btilke is probably best for you.
The airport bus to Westbahnhof is out of the way. The other bus leaves you at Schwedenplatz and this is not really your best connection. The train ( known as CAT train) drops you off at Wien Mitte. A cab to the Bristol from there is perhaps 10 minutes maximum but you must haul luggage some distance. It is not really easy with luggage. For general information: The CAT train does not go to the Westbahnhof. It goes direct to Wien Mitte ( City terminal) You can transfer to subways U-3, U-4 bus 78A, and S trains there with some walking to other parts of the city. |
For you people who travel light and don't mind using public transportation, there is a very cheap option in Vienna from the airport to
the Westbahnhof or anywhere else in the city. The S-Bahn (commuter train) is located under the airport (S-7). It goes to the city air terminal(Wien Mitte) where there is a major U-Bahn stop(trip time approx 30min). The ticket costs only 3 euro and includes transfers to U-Bahn or trams to get you to your destination. EX: To get from airport to Westbahnhof, take S-7 to Wien Mitte, then U3 to Westbahnhof. If staying in Vienna, you might consider purchasing a 24 or 72 hour ticket for unlimited use of transportation. In that case, the ticket for the S-7 is only 1.5 euro additional. Vienna has a superb transportation system and I use it whenever possible. |
Thank you all for the good advice. Given that I don't travel light, I've decided to let the hotel send a car. Can't believe that after so mant months of planning my trip is only a week away!

How will the Bristol know where to send the car? Westbahnhof, Wien Mitte (CAT train) and city air terminal are three different places.
By the way, when returning to airport: The CAT allows you to check your luggage in the train station -- it is loaded directly on your flight, I believe. Hard to credit in this day of heightened security but that is what I was told on-site. |
also agree that the shared transport airport vans are best reasonable way to get from airport to hotel door to door with no hassle.
i also like the train and trams, but with luggage, would have no doubt . much cheaper than taxi by yourself. |
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the Vienna City Air Terminal and Bahnhof Wien-Mitte are co-located within the same couple of blocks on Landstrasser. It is a combined air terminal, regional train station, U-Bahn and tram stop.

Re CAT Train- yes you can check baggage at Cat station but only if you are flying on a Star Alliance carrier or now or in near future Air Berlin and Fly Niki.
What I knew as the City Air Terminal no longer exists since the re-modeling of the Hilton. That airport bus goes to a side street near Schwedenplatz. |
Just a little more info on the "CAT" train in Vienna from the airport to the Wien-Mitte. I just saw on their website that you can buy and print tickets on-line with a credit card up to 30 days in advance! On-line purchases are 1 euro cheaper.
Isn't technology great? |
