Vesuvius-Amalfi-Capri trip
 

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if it's possible to do Amalfi coast, Capri and vesuvius in 2 days with over night stay somewhere in the middle.

My tentative itinerary is
Early morning: Rome to Napoli -pompeii scavi
visit vesuvius peak
same day
Pompei Scavi to Sorrento by Circumvesuviana train
Explore Sorento
Sorrento to Amalfi by SITA bus
Explore Amalfi
Amalfi to Salerno by SITA bus
Explore salerno
overnight in Salerno/posiano

next day:
Salerno or positano to capri - BY FERRY
capri to naples- by ferry
Naples back to Rome in the evening.- fast train

Impossible. How many hours does your day have?

Your first day is not possible.
When is your trip planned? That is important transportation wise.

You could spend the money for a driver to pick you up at Pompeii and take you to Positano or Amalfi that first day. The next day, take the ferry from Positano to Capri. Skip Sorrento and Salerno.

You could also go to Sorrento after seeing Pompeii, then choose either Capri or a trip down the AC the second day. Skip either the AC or Capri and Salerno.

Is going to the rim of Vesuvius super important to you? It takes a good bit of time, and IME, just a big dusty hole in the ground. DH and my teens enjoyed it though.

You might be able to do this if you are going in summer and if the ferry schedules cooperate for your time frame and if you just carry an overnight bag (leave the rest of your luggage in Rome):

Day 1: Train to Salerno, afternoon ferry to Capri -- spend the night

Day 2: Ferry to Amalfi, sita bus to Sorrento (you will see the best views), Circumvesuviana train to Pompei -- see the scavi.

At that point, I think you need a driver to take you up to Vesuvius and then drop you off at the naples train station. But perhaps there is a bus.

But you need to get to the Napoli train station to go back to Rome.

Devil is in the details on that one and even if you made it to all your destination, you would not have time to sightsee in Capri or Amalfi town. More doable would be a plan to join a tour that takes you to Vesuvius and Pompei, and then get a driver to take you to the Amalfi. Morning ferry from Amalfi to Capri, then return to Napoli by ferry and take the train to Rome. But no Salerno or Sorrento.

No - you are trying to put in way more than you will actually be able to do.

Your first day is two days and you really don;t want to go to Salerno - it;s not a tourist destination. And you have not allowed for either the time to get from one place to another or for how frequently the various trains, buses and ferries run (this isn't like a city where they come along every 5 minutes).

Also, what month are you planning on doing this? While transit is fairly frequent in high season - once you get to off season the schedule can be much reduced - some services may not run at all. Plus you need to allow for the time things are open - which also varies by time of year.

@nytraveler- you are right, I will skip Salerno. Planning to use Naples as spring board to and from Rome/Florence. will also need to drop our luggage for 2 days.

@Sassafrass- am thinking the same thing- will do Capri as a day trip next morning and then hydrofoil back to Napes for the 7:30 pm to Florence

Your itinerary is giving me a headache, but if you insist:



Take the the fast train from Rome-Naples. It's just over an hour. Best bet would be to arrange a private driver for the day so that you don't have to worry about bags, transfers, etc. But if you can't:

Train to Pompeii, cab to Vesuvius.

Then... arrange private transfer from Vesuvius? Naples? to hotel in Amalfi. Will cost about E120 from Naples.

While Amalfi is charming it's a PIA to get to anyplace else from there on your incredibly tight schedule. the only transit i SLOW local bus or very expensive cab.

Before you go any further with this - and if you are determined to get to Capri - google and find out the ferry schedule for your dates (may not be that many running - and if the seas are rough it may not run at all). sorrento is the farthest you can go and have reasonable transit options (local train to Naples).

There is always a ferry running from Napoli to Capri and back again, year round, and short of a typhoon, it runs every day.

In your time frame, i wouldn't book anything in advance -- or at least don't book anything you can't cancel last minute if the weather is poor. If it is not raining too hard it is still possible to appreciate Pompei if you have an umbrella, but other than that, every place else you want to go requires dry and clear weather to make it worthwhile to spend all that time and expense getting there.

sandralist - is it better to go from sorrento to amalfi/positano to see the views [ right side of the bus] or the other way from amalfi to sorrento. I have heard that Since the ride back hugs the cliff and not the drop-dead views, a fast ferry makes more sense -

The best view are from the sea - OF the towns on the coast.

While we found driving the coast road fun - and loved stopping in the charming towns - the most picture post card views are form out on the water.

On the bus much of the way you will have a sheer drop off to the sea on one side and a rock wall on the other (the road is cut into the side of the cliff).
