Versailles Private Guides

We are visiting Versailles in July. I have read about the crushing crowds. It appears that you can take a private tour and get into the Chateau before the crowds arrive. These tours are very, very expensive. Are they worth it? If so, which ones do you recommend? Merci

I guess it depends on how you value your time, experience and enjoyment. If it was my one and only time, and I wanted to avoid the crush, then yes, I go with a private tour. You can do a full-day excursion from Paris, or a half-day.

Private tours are always expensive if there are only two, but the choice is waiting in line, being around a mob throughout your visit and maybe taking home a few pictures. And it will be busy in July.

I don't know which tours you've checked, but you can look at what these to have to offer:

I went on an English speaking guided tour of about 20 people or so offered by Versailles and thought it was very worthwhile. We got to see areas of the chateau not open to the public and learned quite a bit about its history. I don't think this tour was expensive; you might check the Versailles website. When we finished this tour we did visit some of the rest of the palace which was crowded by then so just did that part quickly.

We took a private tour from Paris with two other couples and it was fabulous. I am going to go through my info from our trip to see if I can find the name of the guide and the cost. It wasn't inexpensive but we thought it was well worth the cost.

Merci beaucoup. Any idea of the guides that you took which you enjoyed?
