versailles damaged?
 

Has anyone been to Versailles lately?? I had heard that the area had rec'd damage from a storm last year?? If this true how are the grounds and is it still a good place to visit right now?

The very devastating storm was several years ago.

If you hadn't seen it before the storms ('98 or '99), then you won't notice anything now. They lost thousands of very old trees, but have been replanting. The grounds are continually being improved - I read they are reopening some "bosquets"(not sure if that is the correct term) on the outer edges of the current gardens as you walk toward the canal.

The big storm was on December 26, 1999. The Michelin Guide mentions that the park at Versailles lost 7,492 trees in the storm.

When we visited Versailles over a year ago, we hardly noticed any tree damage in the grounds until we got to the area aroud the Trianons and the Queen's Hamlet. Over there, we could see the extensive damages.

We were at Versailles yesterday! It looked fine to me but I dont know what it looked like before the storm. Over by the Grand Trianon there is a huge tree lying across the plaza area, I assume it was a victim of the storm

We were there less than two weeks ago and saw no signs of storm damage. The gardens looked lovely and it was a great day. Make sure you plan an entire day if you want to see the chateau and the gardens as well. Have fun!

Versailles lost perhaps 8000-9000 trees in the storm of late 1999. What most news reports don't mention, however, is that there are around a quarter million trees in Versailles.

i went this january, didn't see any (noticeable) storm damage outside. but inside -- they are renovating the hall of mirrors, so you can only see about 1/3 of it. still impressive though.

sorry, my response was kinda vague: the restoration isn't because of storm damage, it's just restoration!
