Hi first time to France in March - want to see Versailles and tips or info. Thanks

First, check the hours and whether any parts are "undergoing renovation". You can take a "tour" with Cityrama, or go on your own (by RER) for considerably less. The advantage of a tour is that they take you there, you hop the lines (may not be any in March), and are assured of an excellent tour guide. In English. If you go on your own, be sure to peruse the tour brochure and find out when the tour busses go, then select an alternate day of the week. You might want to check out the France Board on AOL. ;-)

If you're going to Versailles - you might wan't to consider doing two things! <BR>First - bring a picnic, a small bottle of wine - two glasses, and enjoy it on the banks of the lake overlooking the castle and the fountains. It's wonderfull. <BR>Second - you might consider renting a bike in the park - since the park is huge and the distances are long - besides it's great fun! <BR>

Carol: I'd say to go on your own. I've done it by tour and on our own and the latter is best. <BR> <BR>Using the Metro is very easy. You can connect to anywhere in Paris without problems. Obtain a Metro map and take the "RER-C" to Versailles Rive Gauche from any number of stations. A special ticket will be needed to venture off of the "underground" route. <BR>Exit the station at Versailles and turn right, about two blocks, turn left and you will walk along a park leading directly to the front entrance of the chateau. This is the most spectacular view of the main gate and courtyard. Go inside at the right-front entrance and get a brochure, taking the unescorted tour through the castle. Continue outside and visit the beautiful gardens and fountains. Now you can go inside near the front-center and book an escorted tour through the royal apartments and opera which will give you the very interesting info on the history of the chateau. <BR> <BR>The picnic lunch is a good idea, depending on the weather which should be in the 50's. <BR> <BR>Have a good trip! <BR>

The most important thing is to go early. Go before they open the building, and you will be able to walk around the gardens without zillions of other people around. Really improves your photos too. Definitely take at least one tour. Some are guided, and others are self-guided audio tours.

My Mother and I took the RER-C and it was very easy and inexpensive. We walk from the station to the palace and loved the view! The gardens are beautiful and taking a picnic sounds wonderful! I plan to do that next May!
