Verona to Bologna by car
Hi,
We will leave Venice early with a car (which we will hire in the same morning), and leave for Verona (Mid-May). we will spend there few hours and then leave to Bologna where we will spend 2 nights. The ride from Verona to Bologna is 2 hours. We would love to make a nice scenic stop between Verona and Bologna, where we could park the car and stroll around. I thought of visiting borghetto sul mincio village, which will extend the ride to 2:45 hours since it's not exactly on the way from Verona to Bologna. What is your opinion? Is there a better located place to make a stop on the way? Thanks a lot for the help and for the wonderful members! |
I might drive to the top of the Colli di Euganei, get out and walk around, the views down towards Padova and even the sea can be amazing.
Alt. stop to see Modena or Ferrara |
Sounds like you're opting for the small village stop, so your plan sounds concrete.
However, while you are close to Bologna, can I also suggest The Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca. It's a basilica church 300 metros above the city. While a road now leads up to the sanctuary, it is also possible to reach it along a (3.8 km) monumental roofed arcade (Portico di San Luca) consisting of 666 arches, which was built in 1674-1793. It's worth the trip. Have fun. Laura |
We walked down the hill from there, southeuropetravel1 and it is astounding. However, at the bottom, we noticed a sign for non-resident driving restrictions in Bologna. So, catj, do find out what days you may drive into the city. We took a cab from our hotel and then walked around that area of Bologna.
I just topped my TR in case you are interested in the Bologna part. |
Valeggio sul Mincio is a pretty town, but unless you are going for lunch (the food is one of the main attractions), I suggest you head to Dozza, a hilltop town which is actually a bit south of Bologna, but you might find it more interesting as a place to walk around
http://nomadbiba.com/dozza-italy-murals/ http://italyproject365.com/dozza-emilia-romagna/ It is not easy to drive to the santuario di San Luca in Bologna, and I don't recommend it. The attraction of the santuario is walking under the portici (the actual shrine is rather ugly and often locked). Not really a driving destination. |
