Verona Hotels
 

Hi there,

I will be in Verona with my husband next May for 2 nights and I'm looking for a hotel. I've searched this board and I'm aware of Giuletta e Romeo, but I'd like to find something less expensive. Has anyone stayed at: Hotel Piccolo, Hotel Martini, Hotel Italia, Hotel Porta Palio, Torcolo, Mazzanti, Aurora or Armando? Or, do you know anything about how well located they are?

We aren't going for the opera, but I want to be in a good location. Should we stay near the arena? Is that the old part of town? I hear the new part of town is not good. Where is that?

The Torcolo is a very good and reasonably priced two star with air conditioning (likely inoperative in May). It is 50 yards from Piazza Bra and the Arena, so the location is optimal. It is across the alleyway from the four-star Hotel Colomba d'Oro. Rooms are ensuite, and there is an elevator. You've got to book well in advance, as they have only 19 rooms. They accept major credit cards. You can walk to the train station in 15 minutes, or take a local bus.

I stayed at the Italia for just one night in August; I was just there for an afternoon of sightseeing and to attend the opera. It's about a fifteen minute walk from the arena. It's across the river, and the area is not as attractive as the old part of town, but I was quite satisfied with everything. It was a little lonely walking back to the hotel when the opera got out at 1:15 A.M., but still quite acceptable.

The Aurora is on Piazza delle Erbe and will be a little lower in price than Giulietta e Romeo. The Torcolo is just about the same price but in a less convenient location. Good luck.

A few years ago we stopped in at a small hotel called Romeo e Julietta right in the center of Verona. We were traveling with our Chow Chow so we could not stay there, but I always thought it would be a lovely hotel to return to. Great location.

We stayed at the Aurora in June 2001 and had a lovely time. As Wayne said, it is right in the old center on a market piazza, perhaps a 10-minute walk from the Arena (if you walk slowly). The rooms were reasonable size with modern bathrooms. The staff was very helpful, English-speaking. Our only surprise: though listed as having an elevator, the elevator starts one flight up from ground level. This was a concern for us as we had a somewhat disabled traveler.

We stayed at Hotel Italia a couple years ago, for several nights. The walk over the bridge to the centro historica was delightful. The hotel was clean, basic and just fine for us. I remember that all the hotels right in town seemed expensive, and noticed that Verona may be a fairly busy convention location. The Internation Bakers' were there on our trip (in May). That could be why the hotel rates seemed a bit steep....they are frequently filled up! We also had a car we wanted to park, and Hotel Italia had parking.

We're going to Verona in May as well. We have reservations at Residence Verona House, which has gotten rave reviews on this board (do a search).
You don't say what your budget is; if you stay 2 nights your bill will be around 100 Euro/night, including all fees, taxes, and breakfast.

Another apartment option is the Ca' Del Orto. Their website is http://gardalake.it/cadellorto/

It is a great option if you have a car. We stayed there at the end of October 2003 and it is a newly renovated farm 'complex'. The renovation is fabulous and the service was wonderful. They are truly nice people who also happen to adore children. We spent about $130/night for an apartment that slept 4 very comfortably.

It might not be well located for you, but for a family traveling with a car, it was ideal!
