Vernon Bed & Breakfast

Does anybody have a recommendation of a bed and breakfast in Vernon? I've perused the giverny.org site and found one to my liking, La Salamandre. Anybody heard of it? Any other notable locations in the 60-80 euro price range? I will need to stay in the immediate vicinity as I will be on foot.

I have to say, I am thoroughly enjoying this board!!!

Good! There's a wealth of information here.

For B&B's in and near Giverny, try this web site:

http://giverny.org/bandb/index.htm

You'll find quite a few, including some close in.

Underhill, thank you for responding. That website you provide is actually where I found the La Salamandre Bed and Breakfast. I was hoping to find somebody who might have stayed there or who have first-hand experience with a Vernon B&B. Cheers :)

Thank you, cigalechanta. I did take a look at that one a couple days ago, but I have a strange mental glitch when I see white plastic patio furniture. If you look closely in one of the exterior photos, you will notice the faint appearance of white plastic chairs and matching table. I know, I have issues. :o

Have you stayed there?

cigalechanta Jul 12th, 2004 02:32 PM

No, I usually stay in Fourges. I can't tell that's plastic furniture in the garden. You must have supper eye sight. But I prefer simple plastic to some ugly iron furniture I've seen.

We stayed at the B&B owned and operated by Marie-Claire Boscher in the blue room. A link is provided on the Giverny website through bed and breakfasts. The cost is 50 euros per night for two with breakfast included (breakfast was coffee, tea, juice, croissants, baggette, preserves, and yogurt).

The location was just blocks from Monet's house. The room was very quiet and peaceful. Madame Boscher was quite gracious and hospitable. We really enjoyed our stay.

Dorothy, the link is above that I posted. Maybe you can tell her if the garden furniture is plastic,

cher_cher Jul 13th, 2004 05:31 PM

Oh, don't take the plastic furniture thing to seriously. It's just a weird thing I have. Similar to the one I have with the sound of fingernails on chalkboard, establishments that serve red wines in white glasses, and George Bush's smirky mug.

Ooh is there a no politics policy here? :P

cigalechanta Jul 13th, 2004 05:41 PM

Cher, I agree with you but some plastic chairs are more comfortable. BUT I have NEVER seen red wine in white glasses. Weird ;tell me where so we can all avoid the place.

cher_cher Jul 13th, 2004 06:11 PM

I see this great blunder occur all the time! Last time was at the Ritz Carlton in Chicago. We sent the glasses back!

cigalechanta Jul 13th, 2004 06:17 PM

Seriously, Cher- I believe you but find it hard to imagine that anyplace would serve any wine in white glasses. Thank God not at our Ritz!

cher_cher Jul 13th, 2004 06:47 PM

Oh, are you thinking I mean white glasses as in the color white?

cigalechanta Jul 13th, 2004 08:06 PM

yes??? What do you mean?

cher_cher Jul 13th, 2004 08:33 PM

I mean glasses intended for white wine. Sorry for the confusion!

cigalechanta Jul 13th, 2004 08:39 PM

LOl......Ok :)

amelia Jul 14th, 2004 03:55 AM

We stayed at La Reserve, and I'm unsure (this is two summers ago if the address is Giverny or Vernon). The website I used was http://giverny.org/hotels/brunet/index.htm The owner, Didier Brunet, was a wonderful man. He designed the gardens for the American Impressionist Museum.

cher_cher Jul 14th, 2004 07:37 AM

That is a gorgeous inn, amelia. Sadly, it's a little out of my price range :(

I feel as though I should have taken the experienced advise here! I showed up to the B&B, La Salamandre, and the windows were shuttered and nobody answered the bell!!! How common is this? Sadly, this occurred after a very harrowing day getting lost and missing Monet's gardens. Dragging my wheelie around Vernon trying to find this place, my directions incorrect. Ugh. I wanted to cry! But I found an OK room at the Hotel Normandy right down the street, bought a baguette, some cannelé, a bottle of wine, took a walk, took some photos, and watched the closing ceremonies on TV!

cher_cher Sep 3rd, 2004 01:15 PM

I can't believe this! I had the wrong address. I rang the bell of her next door neighbor.

Oh, the trials and tribulations of an airhead!!!

hopingtotravel Sep 3rd, 2004 01:58 PM

Tell us more. Aside from your horrible room experience, how were the gardens, museum, lunch, the town, etc. Do you recommend spending the night in Vernon? PS, in spite of being a National Merit Scholarship winner, I've spent most of my lift being known as an airhead. Sometimes it's fun!!!

cher_cher Sep 3rd, 2004 02:26 PM

That is the saddest part of the whole tale, that I didn't get to go to the gardens!!! I was easily able to resolve this, however, because my boyfriend was not with me so it would have only been half as spectacular. We will definitely go back in spring.

I would not stay in Vernon the next time, but probably just do it as a day trip from Paris. The town is a little too small for my tastes. I would have been much happier getting back to the big city in time for dinner and a moonlit stroll. The train ride to Vernon is only about 45 minutes if you do the express, an hour if you do the commuter.

There is a pizza place just down from the tourism office called Pizzéria Pamukkale, at 50, rue Carnot. A very quaint, cobblestone block is there with a fabulous patisserie, where I tried my first cammelé. At the pizzeria I had the Pizza Normandie with bacon, cheese, onions, and an egg broken over the top. Their pizzas are single-serving but large enough to share with a friend. The crust was thin thin thin -- just the way I love it!

Thanks. I've been deliberating whether to drive out, do a garden and museum visit and spend the night or take a day trip from Paris. I had read those were expensive and lengthy. Maybe I need to read more.

cher_cher Sep 4th, 2004 10:45 AM

What is too expensive and lengthy? The train ride? RT Gare St. Lazare to Vernon would come to about 30 USD and under an hour each way. You can walk to Monet's gardens from the station in Vernon if you're up for it or take a cab or rent a bike. I am definitely planning on taking the walk when we go.

I realize this is an old post but Cher, if you are still around, did you have a reservation at this B&B Salamandre? Contact them beforehand?
