Has anyone ever been to Ventimiglia? Is there anthing good about this city?

It has a big railway station and sidings because it's where you change from Italian to French trains and vice versa. There are a few through international trains, but local French and Italian trains turn round there. There used to be separate platforms for French and Italian trains, with passport control, customs and exchange offices in between, but they're not needed now. Most people just pass through Ventimiglia on the way to somewhere more interesting.

And on Friday mornings there is a flea market/street fare - not a food market, but stuff.
Clothings, leather goods, handbags, jeans, sweathers, household, etc.... stuff! And there are some shops on the surrounding streets that carry other merchandise. If you can get to see for a few hours in morning, ok. Otherwise, nothing really missed.

I seem to remember that they have more liquor stores then any town I have ever seen.
I didn't go into any, but the reputation is that all spirits are very reasonable.
The flea market/street fair is huge. We just took the train from Beaulieu for a morning.

Not much except flowers. However, next door is the wonderful village of Menton where we have stayed twice.

I agree with all of the above. It's a big, bustling, trafficky place with an air of imminent desuetude - a place to pass through on the way to something else. It's one of those places that reminds you starkly that Europe isn't all beautiful architecture and lovely countryside.

Our family took the train over from Nice one day and had a marvelous seafood meal on the beach=I believe that there are 2 or 3 restaurants right on the water? We spent several hours walking through the park watching the old men play bocce ball and then to the beach.We boarded in Nice and rode to there then backtracked to Menton-gave the kids a chance to experience Italy for a couple hours(and yes they realized that this was not Rome or Venice-but they lovd the gelatto!)

I've driven through it and while what I saw certainly didn't seem appealing, consider the number of people who actually live there. I'm sure if you asked all of them (as opposed to people here :) if there's *anything* good about their city, at least some of them would say yes.

The Friday market is one of the largest outdoor markets in Europe, and is a fun place to spend a morning, especially if you've been staying for a month in Menton, which is a week destination at most.

In a liquor store in Ventimiglia, I bought a bottle of the 150 anniversary Grand Marnier for about $25. It retails for something like $350 in the U.S..
