Does your DGD like music? My daughter takes a vocal class and loves all music so I was looking into opera for her while I am in Italy. There is no way she could sit through a 4 hour opera, but I came across this website for Music in the Palace in Venice and it looks amazing.

Thought that I would pass it on.

Thanks for that suggestion--while she is not musical, she is taking a choral class and has played instruments. She doesn't think she likes classical music but has danced to it since she could toddle! La Fenice has no performances scheduled while we are there, this would definitely be a grown up experience. Musica Palazzo seems a more intimate experience also which for your DGD would be lovely, but can't quite figure their schedule yet. Guess it must be 60 E each? But just once? Hmmm

Yes I believe that it is 60 E each and they have different performances on different nights as per the schedule on their website.

A number of churches (and other locations, too, I'm guessing) have music performances all the time in Venice - primarily Vivaldi (no surprise there). The prices are less than 60E too! I've never been to one, and I don't know about the quality of the musicians, but I'm sure it would be a great experience, regardless. When our son was 12 and we were visiting central Europe(our son plays violin), we went to a performance by violinist Nigel Kennedy in Prague, at the historic Municipal House; later in the trip, we went to the opera in Budapest. Even though we're not big opera buffs, we all enjoyed the opera. They were both very special experiences (especially Nigel Kennedy), and our son has great memories.

Another great book on Venice is The Thief Lord, by Cornelia Funke. My son liked it a lot. In Venice he really loved that daily life was all by boat, and getting up early and walking around before the crowds arrived. In Florence the Bargello I loved and so did he. In Rome the Colosseum. Enjoy! What a great trip you have planned.

If you have an active child a trip out to Lido by boat and hiring a family bike (upright with seats, sunshade and some storage racks for groceries and beach gear)is a great day out. There is very little vehicle traffic and you are able to have a leisurely look around at the architecture, views back to St Mark's Square etc before heading to the beach side of the island and visiting the beach"clubs". There are bathrooms, restaurants and cabanas set back from the beach in addition to the sun loungers etc on the sand. As Australians this was a fascinating insight to Italian beach culture.

The fish market early in the morning to see them unloading the boats and arranging the display.

Thank you all for adding to our list! Just the early rising and strolling will be fun--love the idea of the markets, and fish market particularly will be interesting. We live on the coast, but with a much more limited catch displayed.

Wondered if Lido was worth going to,as I've read mixed reviews, hadn't thought of biking it.
