VENICE - Where to stay?

I'm planning our return to Italy for next year and I've decided to stay in Venice about 5 nights in middle June. What is a good area to stay?

I've received some rates from Palazzo Foscarini and another B&B.

I have stayed at Palazzo Foscarini (several times) and feel it is a great location. It is right off of Campo Santa Margarita, where there is a morning fish and veggie/fruit outdoor market and several restaurants to choose from. There is also a large (at least large for Venice) market in the campo, so getting food and other supplies for your apartment stay is easy. You can also walk to P. Roma (10 minutes) or the train station (15 minutes) fairly easily. It's a good base to explore the city.

Venice is small and almost any area is central and a good place to stay. I try to avoid San Marco (too crowded), the far end of Castello (past the Arsenal), the train station area, Lido and Mestre.

My friend and I saved tons of money staying at the Best Western in Mestre. It was a quick train ride to and from Venice with trains running every ten minutes and tickets only 1 euro each way. The hotel is nice and clean and located directly across from the train station. When I booked the hotel myself, I thought that this may be an issue with noise and traffic, but it wasn't at all.

They supply a great filling hot breakfast with eggs, sliced meats, cereals, yogurt, pastries, etc. complete with beverage (juice/milk/coffee) in the morning.

The rooms were simple and clean, as it seemed most hotels there were, and came with a private bath and a safe. Free internet access is available at the two computers in the hotel lobby.

If you don't mind staying in Venice itself this is a great alternative that didn't infringe on our stay or touring at all!

The other good thing was trying to find free public restrooms in Venice was difficult at times. So we stopped in a best western by san marco piazza (I think there's two) and told them we were guests of the hotel in mestre and were welcomed to use their restroom with out a fight.

Have fun! I can't wait to go back. It took me two days to realize I was actually there and not in a movie or painting!

We stayed at B & B Sandra (see link above) several years ago and would highly, highly recommend it. The Hosts are wonderful people, clean, clean place and breakfast to die for! We had the upper room that had a small rooftop balcony which was wonderful. When we returned in the afternoon there was always a nice little treat waiting for us. It is off the beaten path but navigating from there was very simple. Feel free to contact us should you need any more information. Sincerely, we would stay no where else if we were lucky enough to make it back to heavenly Venice! Have a marvelous trip!

We loved the Hotel Antiche Figure. Pay a little extra for a room on the Grand Canal.

Thanks a lot for the places, please keep them coming!

Palazzo Foscarini is giving me more for the money than BBSandra.
I checked on Best Western Mestre and it showed me a rate of 200+ a night, too much for us for a room.

Stay in Venice not Mestre,it's magical. You can take a day trip out to the beaches on the Lido with your kids.
Have you looked at La Calcina?

Have you looked at La Calcina?

I just did and it also shows a rate of 150 - 180, for that rate I may go with an apartment instead.

There are so many long threads here about this subject--I suggest you take a look and come back with questions...

If you are interested in an apartment, search for threads enhanced by the contributions of Franco, who has recommended an apartment that looks lovely and is moderate in price.
