Damama-

There are vaporetti that arrive and depart at the train station every 5 or 10 minutes, so even if you have to wait, it won't be long. People do love to cut in front of you in the "bus stop", so make sure and hold your ground when you're getting on.

Also, be sure you're getting on the vaporetto going in the right direction, as multiple boats use the same spot. We got on the wrong bus the first time and had a lovely ride around Venice... :)

Europhile- What did you decide? Have you heard back from the Europa yet?

haven't heard back from Europa yet on the service they use, but I think we will definitely get a water taxi anyway. I know it's expensive, but I am willing to pay for the convenience (especially with our luggage, which for a 2.5 week trip will be most likely be 2 big bags rather than 2 small bags). Also, I really want my husband's first look at Venice to be wonderful, and I think he would appreciate the luxury of a private transfer. All things considered, I'd rather have one less nice dinner and use the money for something as unique as the water taxi transfer. Thanks for all the advice. It is very helpful.

Hi eur,

Get a map of Venice (www.mappy.com)
See if you can arrange for a water taxi that takes you around the city (either N or S) and enters via the Easternend of the Grand Canal, rather than just going down the GC.

It will cost more, but is much more dramatic.

Another question: Most flights out of Venice to Chicago leave early in the morning--6:15 to 7:20 am. How do you get to the airport by 4:30-5:00 am from your hotel in Venice? I don't think the water bus or water taxi runs as early at 4:00 am. Do they? Help please!

Hello
There is water every where in Venice so you should be able to take a water taxi. However, be weiry of the fast fancy speed boats that look very expensive and are private. THey will charge you double what the regular company boats charge. You will find water taxis everywhere, just ask them how much they will charge before you get in the boat.
