Venice water taxi
I am confused about the price of the water taxi from the airport in Venice to Piazza San Marco. Is the price quoted in most books 60 Euro per person or for the boat?
We are travelling with 3 people--that would be l80 Euro from the airport to the Piazza?

It would seem that the price from the airport to any reasonalbe destination is now fixed at 80euro/boat (up to 6 passengers then a surcharge would apply). There is a dispatcher at the dock who signals the boats and points you to one. Was just there last month and much improved over prior free-for-all!

KAKI- I was in Venice just over a month ago, the price for a private water taxi was 80 euro. We shared the taxi with another couple so there were 4 of us total , we split the fare.This was from the San Zaccaria stop to the airport.

When I was in Venice 2 years ago, I took a public water taxi to the airport. The public water taxi ran on a regular schedule. I took it from the Zattere vaporatto station in Dorsoduro. I do not remember if it picks up passsengers anywhere else. The ride from Zattere to the airport was approximately 30 minutes.

Forget about the water taxis, they are just too expensive. Take the Vaparetto. There is one which goes from the main island out to the airport (can't remember which) and takes you on a nice tour past the smaller islands.
As to emckeeve's questions - sorry but you can't drive a car where there are no roads!

okay - there are 2 approaches to get from the Airport to the Piazza....The public Vapororatti (like a bus) or the private taxi (like a private horse drawn coach). Clearly there is a big diffrence in cost....but, if this is your first time in Venice, do the later....it will be a fond memory of your trip......there is nothing like the feeling of a Venice arrival....make it special (you can take the "bus" back)

There are actually 4 fairly common methods of reaching Venice proper from the airport:
1) Water taxi as covered above
2) Vaporetto, about 1.5 hour to San Marco, 5euro
3) Alilaguna boat, maybe about 30 minutes to San Marco, 9 or 10euro
4) Land bus to Piazzale Roma and then vaporetto from there. You could also take a land taxi to the Piazzale. I'm told the bus in under 1 euro and takes about 20 minutes. [The Piazzale Roma is over by the train station.]

Water taxis are great if you have the money, also if you are staying somewhere where the vaporetti don't get close to.
The Alilaguna, a ferry that takes you from the airport to a few locations in Venice, costs 10 euro and takes one hour 10 minutes to get to San Marco.
Check www.alilaguna.com for stops and schedules.
If you are staying near Piazzale Roma or the train station, a land bus or taxi might be better.

As it's shown, the dock can be reached by land from the airport and vice-versa. You can take a regular taxi, it will be likely a half an hour ride

Water taxis are amazing...where else can you feel like a billionaire for only $50-100?
As you coast down the grand canal, sunglasses on, leisurely relaxing in the back seat, you can feel all the envious eyes of the plebian masses staring at you.
Everytime I'm on one, I feel like a movie star.
If only I could afford to rent one for my entire stay!

Just to set the record straight on this thread, there are actually 4 ways to get from the airport to Venice proper as Coco says, but some of the info is not quite right.
1. The alilaguna is a water taxi that makes about 5 stops. It costs about 10 euros/person. Common stops for tourists are San Marco & Zattere. (It also stops at Lido, Arsenale & I forget where else. Look at alilaguna.com) It takes about 1 hr 15 mins to San Marco. The ride is great!
2. A land bus which costs about 3 euros/person & goes to the train station at P. Roma (at the top of the Grand Canal). This bus is supposedly fast (20 mins). From there you can transfer to a vaparetto (an "in town" water bus down the Grand Canal) to get closer to your destination. Vaparettos don't go to the airport!
3. A land taxi to the train station (same route as the bus above) & then a vaparetto.
4. Water taxi as already discussed costs about 80 euros for the trip-not per person & will drop you AT your hotel if it's on a canal or as close as possible. This trip usually takes about 20-35 mins.
To use either of the water options, alilaguna or taxi, there's a free shuttle bus at the terminal to take you to the water dock. Water taxis & alilaguna leave from the same area. You can walk to or from the dock to the terminal but the free shuttle bus is easier. Tickets for the alilaguna are for sale in the terminal as you're exiting. You can use a credit card.
If you're staying at a Starwood/Westin hotel, they have their own water taxi service that costs a bit less (60 euros or so) so contact the hotel.

Just returned from a cruise that terminated in Venice. We stayed on for an extra two nights, but upon leaving the cruise ship terminal, we saw the line of passengers with their luggage in tow, waitng for the water taxis. It was all very organized, as the taxis pulled up, passengers were escorted to the landing and boarded I think in groups to make it more economical. MUCH better than taking the cruise ship's transfer (by land bus and VERY early) which cost about $89.00 PER PERSON)

Thanks, Mclaurie, for cleaning up my information. I have only travelled this route via water taxi personally and should know better than passing along vague 2nd hand info. My intent was to confirm the land routes and should have stopped while ahead!

In fact, in rereading my own post I called the alilaguna a water taxi which is incorrect & confusing. It's a water <b>bus</b> (ie transports lots of people). It's similar to a vaparetto but is used primarily for airport service whereas the vaparetto is for "in town" service & to the islands of Lido, Murano, Burano & Torcello..
