Venice -walk from cruise ship?
 

My husband & I are taking a cruise which begins in Venice. We have some time in Venice and want to know if it's possible to walk from the cruise ship terminal to places such as St. Mark's Square. If walking is not feasable ( and we don't book a cruise ship sponsored excursion), how does one get around Venice? We will be in Venice in late September.

Yes, you can walk.

Do you know where your ship will be docking? Most likely it will be the Marittima terminal. Although it it's a smaller ship it could be San Basile. You can look up walking instructions at a mapping site like google maps or www.mappy.com. Though I'd just use this as a guideline; I can't imagine actually trying to follow a mapped route in Venice. Expect to get lost; it's part of the fun. But Venice is small. Just follow the signs to San Marco.

You can walk all over Venice, but you might find some of the distances long depending on your interest in walking and physical abilities. Some are not prepared to walk up and down the many bridges and are quickly tired. For others there is no problem.

Cruise ships stop in a few different spots in Venice, some stops closer to the main sights than others. The walk from the cruise terminal to Piazza San Marco would take 45-60 minutes, but would pass through many areas of Venice and so might be interesting to you.

If you don't want to walk, use the vaporetto (water bus) to get around town. I suggest you take at least one ride along the complete length of the Grand Canal, since the best facade of each palazzo is turned to the canal rather than the narrow back alleys that surround it.
