Venice vs Mestre

Hello All,

I will visit Venice (4 days) in the coming summer holidays.

I just want to know more about the Mestre. I only know there is an industrial city.

Is it worth to visit there?

Also, I know the hotels in Mestre are cheaper than Venice.

Will you recommend to live there instead of Venice.

Thanks for your advice.

Gavin

There is something to be said for being in Venice late in the evening, when the crowds are gone. I would stay in Venice.

No---stay in Venice---all the difference early and late.

definitely stay in Venice. Mestre is not the same sort of place at all, and you will not have the experience of enjoying Venice after the tour groups have gone in the evening. plus you will have the cost [in time and money] of travelling backwards and forwards every day.

to keep costs down, as you are staying for 4 days [ie i assume 3 nights], you might consider renting an apartment.

You might find less expensive accommodations here:

There is a reason people don't make movies about, or base their novels in, or do paintings of, or compose songs about... Mestre.

The center of Mestre is not so pretty but it is not industrial; the heavy industry is on then outskirts. It would be much better to stay in Venice, but if you cannot find anything within your budget, Mestre might work, since there are frequent trains between the two and the ride takes only about 15 minutes. You will probably find restaurants that are much less expensive than in Venice itself.

Thoughts from others who have stayed in Mestre here:

The centre of Mestre has a big square with many shops cafes and restaurants, and shopping there is supposed to be cheaper than in Venice island.
But nothing can be Venice and it's charm, go for Venice, you will not regret it :)

There is never any reason to stay in or visit Mestre. Definitely stay in the center of Venice (stay in a simpler lace if yuo have to). the city is completely differnt at night - after all the day tours leave - and is magical. Not to be missed.

Venice has history, charm and a uniqe setting. Mestre is - Pittsburgh.

If you are not driving a hired car I would opt for Venice. We had accomodated ourselves for one night in Mestre a few years ago, and drove to Venice. We parked car in covered car park and took the ferry to central Venice. We remained in Venice till very late, and arrived back in Mestre around 1am in the night. We stayed in Mestre as hotel was cheap and brand new, and preferred to sleep out of Venice for just a short stay, but if I had to stay for three days, even if I arrived by car, I would certainly prefer to find accomodation in Venice, not worth going to and fro every time, also considering expenses involved.

Enjoy your trip in Venice, sooo incredibly lovely and unique. It made me feel like I went way back in time. I just could not tear myself away from the majestic Piazza San Marco in the evening, so romantic with the orchestras and coffee shops around it.
