Traversing the stone sidewalks in ancient San Polo is nothing like walking through a modern airport. If you carry a computer, a full handbag, or a heavy camera bag, on top of your roll-about, as so many travelers do, the chance of a luggage tip-over while walking Venice streets is quite great. Watching tourists struggle with their bags in Venice is a common sight while sitting at a cafe enjoying some coffee.

A water taxi is not a waste of money for those who travel and require assistance. I would never let my elderly parents drag their luggage around Italy immediately after an overseas flight. IMO, that's money well spent for their pleasure and protection.

Some people have very strong opinions, especially when it comes to money. Many opinions seem singular-minded to me, focused solely on the limits of one individual's life.

Wrenwood, I watched the walk video and, even though you don't see the exit from the vaporetto, the walk looks pretty simple for Venice.

Simple and flat.

...and no bridge to cross.

Thanks for the additional replies, it does help. I'll have a carry on size wheeled suitcase and my camera around my shoulder as will my sister-in law. My husband will have a carry on size wheeled suitcase and a backpack, so I think we'll try it.

But don't do what the person taking the video did, which is a big no no - walk on the *right*!
