Hi Wandl02
You asked: "Would you recommend using Florence as a base in the Tuscan region, or would you choose lodging outside of that city? ...where would you recommend staying for the Tuscan leg of the itinerary?"

The answers to those questions depend on what you like to do and what type of surroundings you prefer. Do you want to return each night to a farm house in the country with the intimacy and quiet that prevails in that setting - or do you want to be active at night exploring the piazzas? Do you have only a few things you want to do in Florence or a lot of things? Do you have a list of hill towns and markets you'd like to visit?
Let answers to questions like this be your guide - then you'll know the answer to your question. Based on our needs, we choose an agriturismo between Siena and Florence (just minutes off the autostrade) so that we could visit Florence for a few things, but also so that we could do far more visits to hill towns, markets, etc. Our agriturismo was La Volpaia; their web page http://selectitaly.com/hotels/volpaia.htm
By the end of our visit Andrea and Silvia (the proprietors) felt like family.
We stayed at CastelBigozzi near Monteriggioni in May 2001. It was splendid, and wonderfully located as a base to explore all of Tuscany in every direction. www.chiantiturismo.it/inglese/bigozzi
We had a nice double room with an incredible view, and a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. Oh. After all that walking during the day...WoW.

Hi Wand,

We stayed in Chianti as our base & did day trips to San Gimignano, Volterra, Siena, Greve from there. We chose the Hotel residence San Sano and decided it was the most perfect place we stayed on a 3 week trip. It's a four star in Fodor's Hotels & Inns of Charm & Character, Italy. In the TINY village of San Sano, on a hill (of course) surounded by olive groves & vinyards. Only about 12 rooms. We had a large double with decent sized bath room. In an old stone village house with original wood beams, pool, lovely herb/flower garden where they serve breakfast (included) and optional dinner under the wisteria arbor. Divine!

Thank you everyone for your responses.

Based on your advice, here is what I've decided to do:

Day 4: Train to Florence, rent car, drive to Tuscany
Day 5: Stay in Tuscany
Day 6: Stay in Tuscany
Day 7: Return car to Florence, stay in Florence
Day 8: morning Train to Orvieto.

This basically gives me 2 and a half days in the Tuscan countryside and 1 full day in Florence. I know I should see Siena and to explore the Chianti region. Does anyone know of a good winery tour in the area? That would be incredibly romantic.

Anywhere else I should visit?

I really do appreciate all of your recommendations. I've planned my entire trip so far based on those recommendations. I am so excited about it! Thanks again.
