Venice: Travel time from San Lucia to Doges Palace?

Does anyone know how long it might take to get from the train station (San Lucia) to the Doges Palace? The train I'll be on will theoretically arrrive at 10:30 am and I'd like to be able to get to the Doges Palace by 11:15am. Is there an express vaporetto? Is it walkable in that amount of time?

The #41 vaporetto would be the fastest. Scheduled travel time is ~25min from Ferrovia/S. Lucia to San Marco. That time is dock to dock, and does not include waiting in line to buy ticket (there can be long lines shortly after trains arrive.). It doesn't include waiting time to catch the next vaporetto - #41 runs every 15min or so. It doesn't include waiting in line to buy your Doge's palace ticket, nor does it include time to find a place to store your bags (there is a luggage hold near Pza San Marco - they don't let you bring anything into St Mark's church).

I would not book at 11:15 tour at the Doges palace.

Thanks J62, this is exactly what I needed to know! I appreciate the detail as some of these things I had not thought about!

Hello OnLoction, will you be staying in Venice at least overnight and consequently have luggage with you or are you training into Venice from another location and just plan on spending the day in Venice and consequently will not have luggage with you? If so you can also walk from the Santa Lucia train station to the Piazza San Marco. I have done that. But in that I didn't "rush" I am not sure how long the walk would take you..but I would figure one hour if you wanted to stop here and there for a moment or two. I am sure I could make the walk in 45 minutes without any problem.

Hey LoveItaly - yes we'll be taking the train in from Florence for the day, so we won't have luggage, and I will have pre-booked a Venice card. Wish I could be staying overnight but the rising Euro forced us to cut Venice from the trip. I just couldn't stand the thoughts of being so close and not getting to see it at all. Looking at the map of Venice is a little dizzying with all the alley-ways and canals - I wasn't sure that you could walk through quickly. I wanted to be able to take the Secret Itineraries tour - last one in English starts at 11:30am. Thanks so much for your reply - it helps to give me a bit more perspective! I'm still having a bit of trepidation on the train change in Bologna, but adventure is what this is all about, right? Grazie Mille!

I think you've misread the schedule; the train from Florence with a change in Bologna arrives at Venice Santa Lucia at 10:03 not 10:30.

For what it's worth, I think the Secret Itineraries Tour is eminently missable on a first visit to Venice, particularly on a day trip. Look at the splendid public rooms of the Doge's Palace rather than the dingy hidden offices.

Zerlina, upon re-examination - you're right! Duh! that's what I get for working on these things late at night! Thanks as well for the advice on the tour. I'm trying to figure out how to make the most of our short time there. I know we'll come back , but i just had to see it this time!

Hello again OnLocation..just be aware..and it probably won't happen, but if the train is late (the train arriving from Rome to Florence has been known to be late once in awhile) do have a back up plan for your time in beautiful Venice. That will not be a problem as anywhere in Venice is wonderful. Do have a map and some other ideas of what you would like to do. Wishing you a good time in Italy!
