Venice to Trieste worth it?

My partner and I are traveling to London in late April early May and then on to Venice. Is it worth it for a side trip to Trieste or should we spend all the time in Venice? We had considered N. Spain, Barcelona Sitges as second part of this trip but decided on Venice. Any thoughts?

You've left out some very important information. How long are you in Venice? If only a day or two, for goodness sake don't go to Trieste. Staying a week or more in Venice? Yes, it is a lovely town with one of the prettiest squares in all of Europe. Are you talking about doing a day trip or spending a night or two there? If so you can also take a boat down to the neat little town in Slovenia -- Piran.

Patrick, (or others who may know)
Any recommendations for restaurants in Trieste?

We spent only two nights and stayed at the wonderful and beautiful Grand Hotel Duchi d'Aosta. We ate dinner outside at the hotel on the square the first night and it was so wonderful in every way, that we broke our cardinal rule the next night and ate there again.

We did the famous place for lunch -- Buffed di Pepo, where we shared the huge plates of various boiled meats and sauerkraut and drank beers. It was wonderful and fun.

Patrick...we are planning on staying in Venice for 3 nights and thought Trieste might be a nice place for 1 night. Also, how easy is it to pop up to Salzburg from Trieste by train? Thanks!

Whoa. Not easy. The shortest time is over 6 hours with two changes! I'd forget about Salzburg.
Trieste would be fine for one night in addition to three nights in Venice, but honestly after spending a week in Venice this year -- our third stay there -- I'd stay in Venice. Day trips to Padua, Chioggia, even Asolo are all a better effort with your time in my opinion than going off to Trieste. Three days in Venice will fly by.

I agree with Patrick.

bookmdano: I also agree with Patrick. Trieste is not a "destination" location IMHO. It is interesting enough if you are in the area or passing through, but doesn't warrent a long trip to get there in of itself.
Having said that, the drive is beautiful, particularly along the Gulf of Trieste. There are caves, castles, monastaries, vinyards, etc. And, of course there are the Roman ruins at Aquileia in route, particularly the mosaics in the Basilica. Amazing!
But, with so little time, you would be better advised to visit Padua, Asolo or Bassano del Grappa (my choice), as a day trip from Venice. Have a great trip.
