Venice to Switzerland travel
Hello All,
I was looking for some advise on the best way to travel from Venice to St Moritz or Zermatt in Aug.
I am going to spend 5 days in SWI and would like to visits St Moritz , Zermatt and Interlanken. I will then like to take train (TGV) to Paris.
Any suggestions with my itienary would also be helpful.
thanks in advance.

The scenic route is the 10:20 regional train from Milan to Tirano, buying a ticket at the station, €11, no reservation necessary or possible.
This connects with the fabulous Bernina Express Tirano-St Moritz, pre book this at www.rhb.ch - arguably the most spectacular ride there is through the Swiss alps.
Finally, add a Venice-Milan ticket from €19 at www.trenitalia.com, I'd allow at least 45 minutes to change in Milam, just in case of any delay.
Book st Moritz to Paris at www.sbb.ch

Man_in_seat_61 thanks for the quick response.
Looks like Milan and Venice has multiple train stations, how do i choose the right one.
Also do you think it would make sense to reach Milan the previous night to the 10.20 train? I am little worried with 2 kids to make the 10.20am train to Tirano.

You may leave Venice at 6.50 (feasible if your hotel is close to the railway station, like Dolomiti, Stella Alpina, Villa Rosa etc) and do all in 1 day or spend a night at either Bergmao (very scenic medieval city center), Milan or Varenna.
St. Moritz bound Bernina Express trains leave Tirano at 8.34, 10.03 and 14.22. For the first one you have to sleep at Tirano (last departue from Milan 19.20). The second one can be reached by train Milan dp 6.20 - Varenna dp 7.24 - Tirano ar 8.50
If you want to sleep at Varenna or Tirano, you may also board the 15.30 Lake Como boat at Como (connecting train Milano Centrale dp 13.25 - Saronno 13.54/14.04 - Como Lago ar 14.43)and arrive at Varenna at 18.10 and at Colico at 19.30 (train: Colico dp 19.48 and 20.48 - Tirano ar 20.50 and 21.50)

Interlaken - Bern - Paris:
scenic itineraries via either Neuchatel - Pontarlier or via Lausanne - Vallorbe, less scenic, but faster via Basel.

>Quote<Looks like Milan and Venice has multiple train stations, how do i choose the right one.<>
In Venice you leave from Venezia Santa Lucia, which is the station down by the canals, the end of the line. The other station, Mestre, is up on the mainland, on the big east-west train line that goes from Milano to Trieste and beyond. There is a local shuttle train linking the two, it runs several times an hour, and occasionally you need to take that to then switch to a fast long-distance train in Mestre, but only for those times when there is no long-distance train starting out from Santa Lucia in the first place.
Milano has several stations, the trains from Venice and those leaving for Tirano leave from the big central station called Milano Centrale.

If you want to take that 10:20 to Tirano (a good idea since it links up with the Bernina Express), you should sleep in Milan the night before, there are no good connections from Venice that morning - I don’t suppose you can get organized with the children to make the 06:20 departure in Venice...
There are lots of nice hotels near the station Milano Centrale. I have heard good things about the Hotel Berna for example, www.hotelberna.com located at Via Torriani Napo, 18, 20124 Milano, Italy (phone +39 02 677311)

May be your kids would prefer the open air cars of Bernina railway (Tirano dp 9.40, 11.27 and Poschiavo dp 14.24) to the fully airconditioned Bernina Express trains.
Connecting trains: Varenna dp 7.24, 9.24, 11.24

pkshah:
You may have a look at the timetable
http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en
Enter: Venezia S. Lucia to St. Moritz via Sondrio
If it must be the airconditioned Bernina Express train, check
http://www.rhb.ch/Bernina-Express.1676.0.html?&L=4

neckervd, michelhuebeli and Man_in_seat_61,
Thanks for your input.
I think if I have to take the Bernina Express I should live in Tirano overnight.
Which brings me to my next question, Is Bernina Express worth it. I could save time and take the Euro Start to Zurich from Milan. Stay in Zurich and then travel to St Moritz.
Do you think I should do that instead? I could take the Glacier Express later just to experience the Panoramic view trains.
Thoughts?
