Hi,

I am trying to figure out the best way to get from Venice to Nice on June 11. What are some good airlines that fly between the two? I found a 77$ CAD flight that leaves on June 9 and th eprice jumps up to 224$ on June 10 and 11. Are there any other cheap airlines that fly between the 2? I'd prefer not to cut down a day each in Florence and Venice. Kayak isn't giving me any good options.

Train seems to be long and expensive too, and booked up mostly.

Airlines? Venice and Nice are both in western Europe, y'know, not on different continents! ;0)

Just book a train from Venice (Venezia Santa Lucia) to Ventimiglia from €9 at the Italian Railways website www.trenitalia.com.

A train journey across Italy is always an interesting experience, it's an opportunity to rest your weary sightseeing feet for a while and let the scenery come to you, bring a good book, sip a glass of wine...

On arrival at Ventimiglia, simply buy a €7.30 open local ticket and hop on the next local train to Nice, these run every 30 minutes or so, journey time 48 minutes or so, no reservation necessary nor possible.

Booking on Trenitalia.com for dates after the timetable change on 8 June isn't even open yet, so there's no rush. Trains don't even get booked up in March for travel in March, the idea that trains are already 'mostly booked' already for June is crazy, there are always spare seats even an hour before departure!

Definitely biased toward the train too. While it takes longer (7.5hrs ish) it's less hassle and at least on this route generally less expensive.

Can I please chime in on this one as well, Alex? I've looked at that train you mention, Mike, but am unsure about changing trains at Ventimiglia with our luggage.

DH & I each have a wheely bag plus carry on - are there stairs involved in changing platforms? Is there a elevator?

We are planning to travel from Nice to Venice in September this year, and had almost decided to fly because there is no direct (ie no changing) train between the two places.

Changing trains is so simple - you step off one train, walk to the other, and step on.

Assuming you have packed sensibly, so you are travelling with a normal wheeled bag (and not an ISO 20' sea container or something! ;0) ) this shouldn't be an issue.

If you fly, you'll have 2 changes, between bus and plane, and plane and bus, and possibly long walks between them both with your bags, so same difference.

Yes there is a night train. It takes 12.5 hours and makes 3 changes. You have a 2 hour and 40 minute transfer at 2:12 AM. I would not want to sit in a train station in the middle of the night.

There are stairs when you change in Ventimiglia and Monaco. It was an interesting, relaxing journey
