venice to nice

hello everyone,
my fiance` and i are planning our honeymoon and we want to know the best way to get from venice to nice? we want to spend a few days in each. plane? train? please help!!!

About the best you can do on train is a little over 8 hours with a change in Milan. I've yet to find any budget airlines between the two. You can actually fly Easy Jet or maybe others from Venice to London, and London to Nice for less money and quicker than train. But I'd pack a nice picnic lunch and some wine, relax and enjoy the scenery from the train.

I second Patrick's suggestion--the scenery along the route is lovely.

There is also an overnight train with sleeping cars from Venezia to Nice.

Yes, Venezia and Venice are one in the same. It's just the Italian spelling and the English spelling.

We rented a car and drove. That allowed us to stop in Firenze (Florence) and Siena. Not a bad drive, we took our time and were there in six days, eating and drinking the entire way.

Nice-Italy trains have recently been rebranded as "Riviera Day and Night Trains"
Only the night train runs directly between Venice and Nice; otherwise you must change in Milan or Venitmiglia (Italian border station near Nice).
Full fare for a double Venice-Nice would run about $140 p.p. for bed and train fare. Check www.trenitalia.com for discounted advance purchase fares that can be really cheap but also hard to book unless act early - can book 60 days in advance.
As for day trains you can buy PREMs thur RailEurope in US for $19 Milan-Nice 2nd class and then buy a ticket Venice-Milan for 32$ = total $51 Venice-Nice but PREMs thur RE can also be hard to book (RailEurope or agents: 800-441-9413) but again look at www.trenitalia.com for PREMS Venice-Nice. RE charges a $15 booking fee and mailing fee but if you have trouble with trenitalia site, not uncommon, that's an alternative. The line between Milan and Nice is slow going - very congested tracks. Anyway leave about 9:30am get to Nice about 7pm - very scenic route once it gets to the Italian and French Rivieras! Especially between Venitmiglia and Nice where the tracks track right along the gorgeous Riviera coast.
