Venice to Naples by train?

Suggestions for travel by train from Venice to Sorrento - should we spend the night in Rome and continue on the next day or see if there is a possibility of an overnight trip. I think the last train out of Venice is around 4:30 to Rome. Has anyone ever done this or could offer advice. We would like to stay in Venice as long as possible since we will have only 1 night and two days. Thanks - we leave Thurs.

You best option is to take the direct (no train changes) sleeper train (couchettes and sleeping cars) that leaves the Sta. Lucia station at 11:32pm, arriving in Naples at 10:08am. Once in Napoli Centrale, you may switch to the Cs train to Sorrento (every half hour or so).
