Venice to Milan by Train

Disembark Pacific Princess 8/19/10 and need to get from the ship to train station. Any ideas on taxi fare and length of time to station from Ship?

We are combining a cruise with train to Zurich from Milan and going on a 9 day Swiss tour.

Taxi from the cruise ship to Piazzale Roma would be no more than a 5 min ride. From there, you'd walk across the new pedestrian bridge over the Grand Canal to the train station. You'll need to be able to handle your own bags from Pzle Roma, across the canal, then up to the train. I don't believe the luggage carts at the train station can go outside the station.

Wheeled vehicles (taxis or bus) can't get any closer to the train than Pzle Rome.

Don't know exact taxi fare, but I can't imagine it's any more than 10euro- maybe less.

Thank you. Now we are truly motivated to really travel with less luggage.

I have just learned there are two stations in Venice with service to Milan. Is Venezia S Lucia or Venezia Mestre near Pzle Roma

Venezia Santa Lucia is on the island near Piazzale Roma. That is the one you want.

Venezia Mestre is on the mainland. It is the next stop on the train line after leaving Venezia SL.

But, if you have a lot of luggage, then the taxi could take you right to Venice Mestre station from the ship. 10-12min taxi ride, probably 15-20euros - just a guess.

ALL trains from Venice St. Lucia stop at Venice Mestre, but some long distance trains out of Venice do NOT originate at Venice S.L., but rather just Mestre. For those you'd take a short 1 stop shuttle train Venice S.L. to Mestre.

The advantage of trains starting at Venice S.L. is it's a terminal station, meaning trains stop and are parked there for a while - long enough for you to get on at your leisure before departure. If you were to pick up the train at Mestre you'd have to hop on in the 3-4min it was stopped there. Still plenty of time, but not as leisurely.
