Venice to Dolomites
 

Hi,
Off to Venice--in mid May---to celebrate 15 years of marriage. We were thinking of renting a car for a few days in the middle of our stay. Can anyone recommend a 3 or 4 day loop? We were thinking North up through the Dolimite region. We're skipping the cities....simple, quiet, and romantic works for us. We've always been content with a loaf of bread, a bit of wine, and laughter!

Sure--try this:
To Verona--spend nite on Lago Garda at Torre del Benaco. Drive to Val Gardena, stay in Castelrotto.Drive via Dolomite passes to Cortina, spend nite.
Drive back to Venice--drop car.
That can be done in 3 nites--4 is better.Take your camera.

Good evening, Pete1 Might add tht you going from Venice to Cortina and then staying two nights and then drive via
Canaze and Vigo Pass to Bolzano, this is a very senic drive and Bolzano again
interesting before returning toVenice.

Hello, Pete, I second the motion of staying in Castlerotto -- charming, small enough to take it all in, no cars allowed in the old center. But I'd stay there at least two days so you can go up to the Suise Alpe and hike a bit in the huge alpine meadow. (The hike can be as easy or as strenuous as you like) We stayed at Hotel Zum Wolf in the old center and liked its alpine simplicity, balcony with view, and bountiful breakfast. There are many hotels in Castlerotto (aka Kastelruth). Is it fair to mention Rick Steves on Fodors.com? He has a good overview of the Castlerotto area. Happy anniversary!
