Venice- Stay in Lido?
Is it possible to get to a hotel in the Lido area via regular taxi, rather than water taxi? U understand that some car traffic is allowed. I am thinking of staying here instead of inner-city Venice if I visit in the spring. I have some mobility problems (not major), and from what I read it seems that this might be an easier area to navigate on foot when going out for meals and a neighborhood stroll. I would still, of course, journey into Venice for day trips.

Please explain "get to ... Lido ... via regular taxi", specifically, get to from where. Lido is an island also, and I don't know of any bridge to it. We went to the Lido via ferry.
As for "an easier area to navigate on foot", Venice's main obstacles are the many small bridges over it's waterways. Personally, I found Venice to be one of the most foot-friendly cities, and the absence of cars there is my idea of heaven. |
Hi Barbara - There are usually taxis waiting at the jetty on Lido. We've stayed on Lido several times and have used taxi or bus from the jetty to our apartment.
[There are frequent vaporetti across to the island from San Marco and all points on the Grand Canal]. Hope this helps ... Steve |
Since Lido is an island too, the way to get a car there is by car ferry. So I suppose you could get a regular land taxi to take you there from the airport, but I'd imagine it will take longer and may be very expensive. Have no idea what the car ferry costs.
http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/..._car_ferry.htm I don't know that your theory about it being easier to stroll there is true. What is true is you could get a land taxi to take you from your Lido hotel to a restaurant on the island. |
I'm guessing you have some misconceptions about what Lido is like. It is quite large and very spread out. Navigating on foot to go out for dinner etc., will involve some very long strolls generally, unless you happen to have a restaurant right next door or in your hotel. But then that is even more likely in Venice itself, where there are nearly always a lot of restaurants within a short stroll. While there are often bridges and a few steps to get up and over, depending on where you are, I just see navigating on Lido a much bigger problem than in Venice city.

For Steve:
It sounds like we would take water taxi from Airport to Lido jetty, then could transfer with our luggage to a land taxi for short ride to hotel. Right? I'd be interested in knowing about apartment rental, also. We prefer self-catering whenever possible. Thanks. |
Barbara - A water taxi is one way, though it would be expensive (- € 80-100 I believe).
The cheaper alternative would be to take the Alilaguna BLU service: http://www.alilaguna.it/?lang=it&fun...;idstazione1=0 We've stayed 3 times at Le Ville del Lido. Here's the link: http://www.villelido.it/ Hope this helps ... Steve |
