Venice Solo - Suggestions?
I'm considering going to Venice for 4 days in April, looks like I'll be travelling solo. Any hints or suggestions? I'd like to stay somewhere between Rialto, San Marco and the San Zacccari area. Again, any suggestions?.
I think you will find Venice safe for a solo traveler. I've been there alone and didn't mind except when I'd seen something wonderful (which honestly is a lot) and wanted to talk about it. I met some elderly English travelers and we had dinner a couple of times; it was great.

I am planning a trip to Venice in May and have done lots of research on hotels. Get a guide book...Fodors is fine, and look at the areas. Honestly, you might want to be in San Marco since you will be alone. Venice is expensive, no bargains here but you don't have to break the bank either. I looked at the Messner, Agli Alboretti and Al Gambero...all well recommended, just depends on your budget. A friend stayed at Moise last summer and loved it, then there is always Monaco and Danieli. Enjoy!

I was in Venice last July with Globus tour. We heard the hotels are very expensive in the city, but you should get away with a pretty nice room for $120. Make sure the hotel is on the island. With the price we paid Globus, we had to travel 30 min. to get back to our hotel from Venice. Going to a violin concern at night, in a medieval church was my most beautiful experience in Venice. They played Vividi's Four Season that night. There were girls dressed in tradional clothes selling tickets in the alleys behide San Marco's square. And there is small shop on the opposite side of canal next to San Marco's basillica sells the best Forcaccia I've ever had.
Enjoy.

Becky, Mary & Jennie,
Thanks for your comments and suggestions.
Any idea what the weather is like in mid to late April? Also, April 25 is "Liberation Day" in Italy and St. Marks patron day in Venice. Any idea what impact that will have on things being open, etc?
Try the site veNETia.com It is a wonderful site, complete with music, which connects to most everything you'd ever want to know about Venice.

Is this the day you arrive? By train, or air? The only complication I see is whether or not there is a "parade." Often Venetian celebrations include events in the canal which will prevent the vaporetti from running. This means you will have to navigate by foot from the train station even to your hotel. If you arrive by air, the same problem could occur..just don't know how you'd get from the airport

Who can tell if they will celebrate with a train strike...or any strike...any excuse. Part of being in Italy.

As far as closings are concerned, many shops in the native areas close at noon on Saturday until Monday morning. Museums? Anybody's guess and perhaps whim if there is a celebration.

It won't matter. There is plenty to see in Venice even if EVERYTHING WERE CLOSED!

Check out the site above, I believe there is a list of holidays. Have fun.

If you need any other suggestions, write me directly.

Take a rain coat...it will be chilly in April.
