Venice SOFITEL Hotel - has anyone stayed there or in the area?

I may be in Venice in a couple of weeks. The only hotel I can find is the Sofitel in Giardini Papadopoli, Santa Croce (about US$175 per night). Have any of you stayed there or are you familiar with the area - any information would be appreciated.

Also, has anyone taken a private taxi directly from the airport to this area and if so what was the approximate cost? I believe that private taxis are expensive but as I will be arriving at night and will have a notebook, bags of files as well as luggage, I don't thnk I'll have any other option - any ideas?

Many thanks for your help.

Regards .... Ger

I know the hotel. It's a good first class hotel that has been recently re-done. It is close to the Train Station in Santa Croce (just across the canal actually) which is why it is usually available. Most tourists coming to Venice prefer to stay closer to San Marco. However this hotel is in the original old venice and is actually a lovely quieter neighborhood. Venice is really small enough so that you can walk almost anywhere from there and if you get tired you can just take a Vaporetto. FYI, if you're getting it for about $175 USD per night this is a great rate. Enjoy!!

I saw this hotel when we were in Venice last year and thought it was beautiful.

Its not near St. Marks, but you'll be walking all around anyway. That's the only drawback.

Have a great time.

A water taxi from the airport should run about $70, but will be worth it given what you're carrying.
