Venice, Slovenia, Croatia by car or train

Four adults traveling from Venice to Slovania and Croatia. Is it easier by train or by car or bus? We will have ten days. We like to keep busy and see the sights. Thanks for your help.

I would personally use the car. Starting from Venice, I would stay a couple of days there, rent the car from there, go towards Trieste, have a stop there for a few hourse to visit Castello Miramare, and then head towards the border. The Istian Peninsula is vey nice, so I would spend a couple of days maybe stayingin Pula and then do some sightseeing around the area. I also like Slovenia, I have been there when I was a teen ager during a school trip. We were actually leaving from Trieste and we did the day trip to the Postonjia grottos (marvellous) and Lake Bled (enchanting little peaceful place, it was spring though, in Summer it is more crowded). If you must return the car back in Italy, I would go back to Italy from Slovenia and visit the Brenta area which is renown for the beautiful Palladian villas. It is also possible to do a mini day cruise on the Brenta river.
Just my suggestion.

I would take a train to Trieste, then use a mixture of buses and ferries to go down the coast to Dubrovnik, then return to Italy by ferry and train to Venezia (if you need to return there).

I agree with Geoff .as I heard that the rental car coy won't let you take the car across the the border .I also read that it is possible to rent in Trieste & do this , you will enjoy the scenery much better by bus & ferry . go to www.visit_croatia.co.uk for timetables & other help, they have good message boards

we did a 2 week trip from venice to croatia by car last summer via trieste and visited miramare [worth it just for that alone]. trieste is a good 1 to 2 day stopover .we then drove to baska on the island of krk and chilled out for 4 days .we should have gone to lake bled or down to drubrovnik but maybe next time.a car was very flexible but the croatian roads are fairly average.

When we rented from AutoEurope they said there was NO problem taking the car to either Slovenia or to Croatia. I'm not sure what makes you think there might be a problem with that.

I'd definitely opt for the car for this one, although as many of you know I'm more often pushing trains than cars.

From the replys it seems that both are options to consider. I thank each of you for your response. If I chose a bus is there room for small suitcase for each of the four travelers. Thanks.
