Venice Restaurants

I am interested in restaurants in Venice.Especially any in the Cannereggio area.If you have a memorable restaurant in any area of Venice,it would be nice to hear about it

Good afternoon, Stan Have not stayed in the Cannaregio section of Venice, however in going from the Santa Lucia RR station to the Rialto Bridge on the Lista de Spagna, the and the other Rio Terras , will find a mess of ristorantes, however have only eaten at two in this area, the first is on the east side of the Campo S. Germina, the second is a chinese ristorante located on the south side of the Strqada Nova near the Campo di Santi Apostoli. Ristorantes we normally fre- quent are DA Raffaele, Ponte delle Ostreghe, S. Marco 2344, about two blocks west of the west end of the Pza S. Marco. BAR Al Teatro, Compo San Fantin, S. Marco 1916 located along side the building of the La Fenice Opera house near the Pza S. Marco. Chat Qui It, San Marco frezzeria, 1131 (self service, about 1 1/2 blocks from the Pza S. Marco. The favorite special occasion ristorante is the Poste Vecie, Rialto Perscheria, Ven. located in the Venice Rialto fish market, go at noon to find the place and make reservations for that evening. We ate recently at Vini da Gigio in the Cannareggio district. It is a Fodor's recommendation, but we didn't know that until after we ate there. It was the best meal we had on our trip. The service was very good, the food excellent, and the atmosphere charming. I would highly recommend it. Very good wines as well.

Stan, My husband and I had a wonderful meal last week at Cantinone Storico in the Dorsoduro district (Fonda. di Ca' Bragadin on the canal). The risotto scampi was wonderful as was the service.

You are right to look in this area. San Marco, the Rialto and near the station are best avoided, in my experience, as this is where the tourist restaurants are. We found several good restaurants in the Cannareggio, including Da More, and also loved the Castello district, where you will find even more good places. Corte Sconta is one. Good luck.

All of the advice you've received is good. I'll second Richard's nomination for Da Raffaele although it's not in Cannaregio. It is on a small canal and in good weather you can sit outside and watch the gondolas pass by. Also, they don't seem to mind if you order a full meal, or just pasta. Reservations recommended. Venetians dine late, so if you want to mingle with locals rather than tourists, dine at 8:30 or later. Corte Sconta is said to be excellent, as francesca points out.

Ditto Bar al Teatro, try just around the corner, Taverna la or al Fenice. The very best meal we had in Italy (3 weeks). It was a seafood risotto with zucchini blossoms and several sorts of cheese. Try vino vino, and Montin was also good. The important thing is to get out of the heavily touisted areas and find good food and "reasonable." prices.

Are the restaurants in Venice terribly intimidating? We haven't been anywhere in Italy before and haven't got a clue what to expect!

Helen, I'm not sure what you mean by intimidating. If you mean very fancy and expensive, some are very fancy and many are expensive. However, there are suggestions available from past and present postings on this forum (you can search Venice restaurants) for affordable and friendly places. Venice can be pricey, you need to look hard for bargains. But they are VERY used to tourists, and I found them to be very pleasant and accommodating.
