Venice-Renting a flat in a palazzo owned by a contessa, with available boat.
know in my many searches for apartments in Venice I'd encountered such a possibility, and find the prospect intriguing. But my husband worries that it might be more than we bargained for to try to wend the waterways.
Of course, we visited Venice in 2005, and I lost my notes.
Does anyone know of such places? It would also be wonderful to meet someone who is part of the rich tapestry of Venice, but also realize that she would not be likely to schmooze with visiting Americans.

We stayed in one of the contessa's apartments last month.
The apartment was lovely as was the contessa. She was very gracious and helpful.
My only concern would be time of year that you are going to Venice. The apartment does not have AC. We were fine in early May but I imagine it could be uncomfortable midsummer.

Thanks, Judy. One of the reasons I love the SF Bay Area is the temperate climate.
And Ira, I mentioned the contessa because I'd recalled the apartment with available boat was owned by a contessa. It was part of the allure, of course, but I'd be as happy to get to know anyone in Venice, if possible.

Hello oaklandlady,
We had the pleasure of staying in her two bedroom apartment (the one on the top floor) a number of years ago. She was an absolute delight to know, and she was very helpful in finding restaurants, grocery stores, etc. The apartment was furnished with beautiful antiques.
And yes, there was a (very small) boat "parked" on the canal out the front door. We never used it, but it was there for tenant's use if desired.
The area is very quiet, across the Grand Canal from St. Mark's, but it is easy to cross, either by walking over a nearby bridge or taking the vaporetto or traghetto.
As far as AC, when we stayed there, there was a unit that was portable from room to room. It had a hose that went thru the window for the outflow (or something like that), but it was very cool. We'd just move it from room to room.
Happy travels!
