Venice Question about Burano

Hi, can anyone help?
I normally travel in Italy solo and don't make many preplanned excursions.
(whew! It's work!), but this year I've invited my mom (over 80. but thinks young) to come with me.

We'll be in Venice for just a few days. We'd like to go to Burano. I was last in Venice 30 years ago so it will be sort of like my first time there.

Can anyone tell me about how long the vaporetto trip to Burano takes and where we can take the right boat? (We are staying near the Ca d'Oro stop.) I've been searching the threads for this bit of information without luck so far fo some reason...many people say it take "awhile" but don't mention whether that's an hour, 2 hours, etc....

Thanks in advance!

There is a journey planner on www.actv.it. It suggests going from Ca d'Oro on line 1 to Lido then on line LN to Burano, with a journey time of just under two hours. There are probably quicker routes which involve more walking. From the railway station ("Ferrovia&quot, it's only an hour to Burano if you get the direct boat to Murano and change there for Burano. The main service to Burano starts from Fondamente Nove - direct boats take 42 minutes.

Hi Alloro - You will normally have to change at LIDO - from where there are regular services to Burano via Punta Sabbioni/Treporti.

From Lido it's about 50 mins.

Your total journey time will depend on how long you have to wait at Lido.

For timetables see:

Hope this helps ...

Steve

I was also thinking of the DM to Murano then another boat to Burano. When we were there last year I think we were directed to a ferry that left from S. Zaccaria that went directly to Burano that would take a little over an hour. We ended up not doing it because it was pouring rain. This September we would like to try again to go to Burano. Does anyone have knowledge of this route? Thanks.

It would be much quicker if your mom is able to walk 10-15 minutes (depending on walking speed) to Fondamenta Nove north of where you're staying. From there, you could take line 13 to Murano Faro and switch to line LN to Burano.

As an example, a line 13 leaves Fondamenta Nove at 10:00 and arrives at Murano Faro at 10:09. An line LN leaves Murano Faro ten minutes later (10:19) and arrives at Burano at 10:52.

thanks too, bfrac

Thanks ellenem, I'll put that possibility into the mix- I sometimes think my mom, at 86, has more endurance even than me, for example, when she visited me recently in NYC, she decided to walk downtown to visit my brother-a distance of over 60 city blocks. I can't keep up with her!

Sounds like your mom can walk to Fondamenta Nove with no problem--and it will cut an hour off the trip to Burano.

I printed a copy of the timetables.

Line LN goes from Fond. Nove to Burano in 42 minutes, without having to change boats. It leaves at 10-after and 40-after each hour.

The trip planner at the ACTV site gave me the line 13 to line LN connection when I put in Fondamenta Novve to Burano. Go figure . . . Glad to here the trip is even easier.

Does anyone have a link to a complete map of the vaporetti system online? I kept searching but couldn't figure out where they hid a map at the ACTV site . . .

"Glad to hear" . . . I hate that kind of spelling error.

Glad to see the correction above. Yes we did round trip from Fondamenta Nove to Burano this summer without changing. Very easy.

But I do enjoy the trip on the bigger boats from Lido if you have more time.

You might also be happy to know, that on Burano, where you almost immediately have to cross over a smallish bridge to get onto the main street, there is now a flat bridge for easy accessibility.

ellenm, here is a pdf link for the map you are looking for.
http://www.hellovenezia.com/jspvenez...one_est_07.pdf Sorry, I don't know why my posts duplicate the link. I really don't paste it twice.

You Fodors travelers are amazing! Thanks for all these details! When I travel around in Italy solo, I rely on the fact that I speak Italian and have all sorts of fine adventures, but this kind of detail will be a real life-saver while traveling with my mother. With all the help you've provided, I can get her to Burano smoothly, and she never has to know or think about any of the background work. I hope I can make the whole trip look easy for her, because I know it will likely be our last together, and I want to surround her with beautiful memories.

Thanks really!

We follow Venice with Florence. I usually concentrate in going to off the beaten path places, so I was last in Florence in 1966, just after the Flood.
That's another story, but unforgettable.

All those years ago, I impulsively threw my gold high school ring into the Arno while saying good-bye to the young Florentine ragazzo I had met there. It was to make sure I would return one day, and now that I am almost 60, I'm going to make my return, to complete the circle. My mom has always dreamed of Florence, so we'll have a taste of it!
