Venice or Pompeii/Vesuvius with teens?
We're planning a trip to Italy this summer with a 12-year-old and a 15-year-old. We're spending 4 days in Rome and 4 days in Tuscany. And have another 2-3 days we can spend somewhere else. Our options are driving to/and staying in Venice for 2 days or staying in Sorrento for 2-3 days, with the latter stay including seeing Pompeii and climbing Mt. Vesuvius. So my question to anyone who's done both places, is which do you think teens would like best? I've considered a compromise...doing Venice and a day trip from Rome to Pompeii...but that would exclude Vesuvius. Any thoughts are welcome.

This is a no-brainer; Sorrento. Venice is spectacular, but in the ocntext ofyour trip and sitruation, go to Sorrento. Pompeii could be very well be the the highlight for your teens.
CRUCIAL: lodging with A/C and a pool.

I never thought I would see the day when I would advise anyone to skip Venice, as it is one of my favorite favorite places, but it has arrived. Given the fact that you are travellig with a 12 and 15 year old I think Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius is the better option. I would opt for Serronto this time and save Venice for that romantic vacation for two. J

Hi lammom, you don't say whether your children are boys or girls or one of each and what their interests are so it is hard to answer.
I will say that when my daughter was a teen she would vote for Venice, well actually she still would. Yes, she enjoyed Pompeii but she left her heart in Venice, well part of it anyway.
Whatever your family decides have a wonderful trip!

loveitaly has an excellent point. I took my daughter to Venice when she was a teen and she absolutely loved . My son loved Venice too, actually more than Pompeii, but for him the highlight was climbing Vesuvius just to tell his friends that he did it when he got home. That was even though when we got to the top it was in clouds and we couldn't see a thing. BTW, there is a guy at the base of Vesuvius renting walking sticks for a Euro. Spring for it, you'll be glad you did.
