Venice or Paris?
 

DH and I are planning our vacation to Switzerland and the Italian lakes for April/May. We are using FF miles.

Right now our plan is to spend time in Vevey, the BO, Mennagio and Venice. Now we are considering dropping Veice in favor of Paris. We will be picking up/dropping off our car in Switzerland and it seems like both Paris and Venice are just about equal train distances apart from where we would be training to (Paris to Vevey vs. Lugano to Venice).

We've been to Paris and loved it so its very tempting to go back. I have never been too interested in Venice but it gets so many raves here that I feel like I should visit. I know that this is very subjective but if you had the choice what would you do?

As much as I love Paris, I think that this is a good time for you to visit Venice.

Absolutely, totally and utterly no contest.

Paris is just a Western European city - and mainly a construct of the early 19th century. Venice is stunningly beautiful, full of the unexpected. Stop, while you are there, and imagine how it must have been when Marco Polo travelled to China; or when the Venetian fleet ruled the Eastern Mediterranean (ever been to Crete?)

Yes, Venice. Maybe you can fly into Venice and out of Geneva.

Both cities are unique in the world, but, you never know, Venice may sink if you put it off.

One warning: April/May in Switzerland is between ski season and summer season. Some things might be closed.

If you have already been to Paris and never to Venice, why wouldn't you go there at least once to see if YOU like it or not???

I've been to both and would go back to both, but my heart belongs to Venice.

We just booked our tickets; into Geneva and out of....Venice! I knew I should go to Veice, but I guess in some way I just needed some confirmation. Its easy to want to go back to the places you love, and Paris was definitely a place I love. But in the end we decided to give Venice a chance.

Mimar, I understand that we picked a strange time to visit Switzerland. We did this because by finishing our trip before May 15th we qualified for "saver miles" through AA, meaning that the trip only required 40,000 miles as opposed to 60,000. We posted our itinerary last week and it was suggested to stay in Thun in the BO instead of Lauterbrunnen (my first choice) because of the time of year. We are not big into crowds anynhow, and are used to traveling during off season, so hopefully we will still have a fabulous time.

I enjoyed Paris, but I LOVED Venice. I think you have a great trip planned.

Thanks Suze! I keep reading about how much people love Venice so now I am so excited! I'll just have to save Paris and those wonderful macaroons for another trip.... ;)
