Venice or Cinque Terre?

Decisions, decisions. Too many destinations, not enough time. Planing to spend time in Montepulciano/Siena and Florence. Trying to decide between CT and Venice for our third stop. Any thoughts?

Tough call, Christy. Venice is a great town to walk about & take in some art.

The CT are beautiful but not standard beach towns, exactly. Will you want to hike them?

Do you have a car, or are you traveling by train?

And how many days will you be spending on this third stop?
BC

Christy - whenever we find ourselves faced with a choice like this, we ask: of the two, which will be easier to visit should we not return for many years, i.e. when we are older? or: which would be easier to visit in conjunction with another trip?

We opted for the CT, telling ourselves that we can more easily visit Venice in conjunction with a trip to Austria. Or, if we don't come back for many years, Venice, being a major city, will be easier to visit (it has an airport, for example.)
Fast response! Thanks guys.

Book chick -- we would definitely hike and we have two days. We have a car for earlier in the week, but I was thinking that to get to either from Florence, it might be easier (and faster?) to take the train.

Christy,
Based on your updated info & the very good & practical suggestion Sue made, I think you should do the CT. You will definitely enjoy!
BC

Sue's suggestion IS very wise. With so many things that we would like to see in Italy, I'm sure that we'll be back.

Christy:

What time of year will you be in Italy? That may impact your choice.

Also, the CT towns are small & offer natual beauty & some nice hikes. It's a very different experience than Venice.

Travel options: it's actually easier to get to Venice from Florence on the train than it is to go to Cinque Terre from Florence. There's a EuroStar (ES) that runs between Florence-Venice. Whereas, getting to the CT requires at least one, possibly 2 train changes. Total travel time is about same for both --- just under 3 hours.

Can't answer on feasibility of keeping your rental car & driving to either place.

Hello Christy,
I'm with Lisa, having been to both, I'd choose Venice.
A.M.
