Venice - museum reservations needed?
 

I know in Florence it's suggested that you reserve things in advance to avoid lines (i.e., the Accedemia and the Uffizi museums). I don't know about Venice though. Are there museums (or anything else) in Venice that would call for booking an advance time to minimize waiting? Thanks.

the answer to this Q rather depends on what time of year you are visiting Venice and how much you mind being tied down to timed visits.

from our experiences during our recent trip, i would recommend booking in the following order

secret itinerary tour at the Doge's palace - a "must book" any time of year - and you can stay inside and see the rest of the palace after the tour ends.

st. Mark's basilica - as booking and entry is free, there's no harm in booking a slot. perhaps before or after your secret itinerary tour.

the accademia - in March, we just walked in, but it was 5pm. if your trip is between May and Sept, booking might be a good idea. if you decide against it, either go very early, or very late. [that also works for the accademia in Florence, in my experience]

the frari/san rocco - so far as I'm aware, you can't book.

guggenheim - 4 visits to Venice, and I still haven't got there. so i don't know. probably if your visit is in high season.

ca pesaro - at present has the Romans and Barbarians exhibition on. we just walked in at about 2.30 in the afternoon, but it was quite busy. if it's a priority, then book. [the cafe looked good and reasonable if that helps

ca d'oro - we really liked this museum that we went to on the off-chance on our last day. [the fact that we it on a free day as part of museum week may have helped!] Its position is lovely, the balcony has a great view over the grand canal, and the art is well laid out with lots of places to sit. it's a bit off the beaten track, so probably you don't need reservations.

ca rezzonicco - unlike others on this forum, we were distinctly underwhelmed. if you think that you won't be able to exist without seeing the interior of a venitian palace laid out as in the 18C, by all means book. otherwise, it's a definite "maybe" for a wet weekend!
