I remember reading something about the church and the chanting in Frommer's Italy on $80 A Day-Venice section, of course. I've loaned out the book so I can't provide you with details.

I think you mean the San Giorgio Maggiore for Sunday mass at 10:00. We did that once and were not impressed. The views from the Campanile there did impress.

According to a Web site and "Top 10 Venice," the Sunday mass with Gregorian chant at San Giorgio Maggiore is at 11:00.

There is also a school of Gregorian chant in Venice, which presumably gives concerts from time to time.

Upon arrival in Venice, go to the tourist office there and pick up their printed pamphlet about museums, churches, etc., etc. It also lists musical events, which include performances of Gregorian chant by choirs rather than by monks.

I agree with BobtheNavigator. The Gregorian Mass was a disappointment. The choir was very small - four or five people.

As I child, I sang Gregorian Chant at Masses in our parish church. I still love it and was glad for even the small window we had on it in Venice, however.

I believe the Gregorian mass is sung during the week at 8am at San Giorgio Maggiore. I know for certain it is sung at 11am on Sundays. We ran into a few tourists that had gone to it and they said it was a really special and unique exerience.
