Venice in winter
Will be in Venice mid-Jan. If anyone has been there during this time of year and would like to offer any suggestions/advice or any ideas on special things we might do, it would be appreciated.
Personally, we're hoping for snowfall.
Thanks.

PATRICK:
I was in Venice at the end of February-first part of March last year. The city (my favorite) is less touristed than other times of the year so reception from the natives seemed to be more gracious. It snowed one day. Wet, big flakes that turned to an inch of slush almost immediately. Can't offer much advice about special things to do since I don't know your interests. Can, however, nominate a few eating places if your interested. Ciao e buon viaggio.

Patrick, see the topic I just posted on staying warm. I originally wrote that in response to your note.

We couldn't take the water boat back to the airport because of ice in the water. The water taxi took us to P. Roma and from there we had to catch a taxi that took forever to arrive. We needed the extra hour we had allowed to get to the airport.

Venice was as magical as ever. Can't think of anything particularly more fun to do because it was winter, besides sip Grappa!!
Thanks very much for the very helpful suggestions.
Frontsight: Going tomorrow to pick up a few of the silk undershirts.

Dale: Would appreciate your restaurant suggestions. Thanks.

Patrick,
Have been to Venice last three years in February and has been great. Weather could be a little different this year because of the big freeze over Europe.
We are going again in Feb.
It's fun to catch the local trains to Bassano Del Grappa, Vicenza, Treviso etc. If you go into the ticket information desk at the Station they will give you a printout of what times the trains leave Venice and return and the cost.
As far as eating we love La Zucca which is very busy and has 2 sittings at night. Also enjoy Osteria Vivaldi, Al Mascaron and Ai Tre Archi is okay but coffee was pretty expensive. My husband love Coffee Correto ( expresso with Grappa) and they usually only charge him for the coffee. Stock up on water and soft drink etc at supermarket. Enjoy your trip Ciao

PATRICK:
Since I usually stay in Dorsoduro, I nominate l'Incontro at the edge of Compo Santa Margharita. Not expensive and features a Sardinian chef who IMO is a poet with beef. The menu, unlike most Venice restaurants, has little or no seafood on it.
Now, for an adventure, seek out Osteria Vini Padovani at Calle dei Cerchieria, 1280. My favorite lunch and happy hour place is located between and just off the walk from Accademia to Campo Santa Margharita. Sometimes if you order pasta it comes from across the calle borne by a lady who cooks it in her home. The place seats about fifteen and the husband and wife who run it are ultra hospitable. Ciao e buon viaggio.
