venice in september?
I am in the process of planning a trip to Venice and Florence in September. How is the weather? Will it be hot (i have heard it's hot in summer). What is the avg. summer temp? Wanted to ask you all instead of relying on Weather.com. This will be our first trip to Italy!!! Much awaited. Is there a risk of flooding in Venice ?

DO rely on www.weatherbase.com or www.worldclimate.com - - yes, it will be warm, most likely.
"Flooding" in Veniceis a relative term/concept. Venice is a colander sitting on a lagoon. The water rises, sometimes - - genrally only for a few hours - - and then drains right back down. It rarely occurs before November 1, as I understand it. Best wishes, Rex |
Have been to both cities in mid to late Sept and even early Oct three different years and each time the weather has been spectacular. I'm thinking 75 ish. We had some people in our group who wore shorts in the Florence area, so it was warm but I can say that it was not hot. Don't recall having to use AC. some mosquito annoyance, but not enough to impact the comfort level in the rooms. Have a great trip, both cities are wonderful.

Rex, love your comparison of Venice to a colander. Perfect.

do check the forecast before you go, but when I've been there in late Sept and early Oct (twice) I've found it cool in the mornings (needed a sweater or light jacket) but by mid day it was quite warm, at least upper 70s.
Evenings cool again. September would be early for the usual flooding season. |
I'm also going to Venice in Sept. On my last trip (2002), I was there for two days in October, and was surprised by how warm it was. I'm planning on short sleeves (with lightweight long sleeves for evenings). Don't forget the humidity...I'm used to it, being in New Orleans, but it was definitely muggy (can you say "frizzy hair day"!). Of course, a bad hair day in Venice is better than a great hair day anywhere else!

Thanks everyone for all the info. I am looking towards end of September :) Can't wait :)
BTW -- I went to school in New Orleans. Have very good memories :) |
