Venice in October - cold, wet?
 

We are thinking about going to Italy in October, getting to Venice around the 10th of October. What weather conditions would we find then?

The weather is variable. Prepare for warm and sunny, warm and rainy, cool and sunny, cool and rainy, cold, hot.

I fear that you are asking for weathr forecasting precision that is not possible. Could it be "cold"? (say high 45, low 35) Yes. Could it rain evry day? Yes.

Are these the average conditions? No.

The average high is 64, and the low 48; on average there are 13 days in the monthof Octobr abov 65 degres F. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Venice for October was 32.

The average rainfall is 3 inches, slightly more than 1/12th of the annual 32 inches.

Weather is unpredicable by its very nature. There are a number of websites (and listings in most decent guidebooks) where you can find average monthly temperatures, precipitation, etc. for virtually any major city. Some even show historical data - I don't have a link handy for you at the moment, but try a Google search.

For what it's worth, it was lovely when I was in Venice for five days in early-mid October two years ago. Temps were in the low-70s during the day, and perhaps mid-50s at night. One day of light drizzle, and otherwise clear and sunny.

I was there in Oct 2002..actually found it warm (not hot, but warmer than I expected). I was wishing for short sleeved shirts. Very humid (much like home...New Orleans) Didn't rain on us, but we were only there 2 days.

Thanks everyone. I was just worried if they had a rainy/winter season that would make October an undesirable time to go. I was reading about the flooding that seemed worse beginning in October. Just didn't want to find us treading water the whole time :)

We were in Venice early October of last year. Weather was gorgeous all of the 5 days. Sunny and warm, we had dinner outside every night (in a light sweater). I realize though that we may have had very good luck!

Our first time in Venice it did rain and flood - had to chalk it up to having a unique travel experience - and it was, walking on the platforms, watching the Venetians in thigh high waders, seeing how the shops and restaurants try to keep the water out, sloshing thru St. Marks while the water crept over the floor mosiacs, cruising down the Grand Canal while the water crept higher and higher on the buildings - it was amazing. We had seen the little waliking platforms when we arrived the evening before - I thought there had been a picnic that day! However on our second visit the weather was thankfully gorgeous. So hope for nice weather but the point of my story - Venice is wonderful even if the weather is not

marsig--you might be treading water the whole time you are there. Or it might be glorious, beautiful weather the entire time. No one can predict this far ahead.

Venetians love the month of October, as do I, because there are very few tourists and aqua alta in October is mostly an urban myth. Just ask any shopkeeper. November is the biggest troublesome month.

Anyway, the flooding is quite magical unless, of course, you're Faith's cousin.

We were in Venice the first week in November a few years ago (2001). It was beautiful. Temperatures were in the high 50's/low 60's during the day, and low 40's at night. It was sunny, blue skies and no rain -- except on the day we left for Milan.

Though November is considered the first month of the most severe aqua alta season, it is not unusual for the high water to occur in October.

In the past few years, I have been in Venice the first week of October three times, and on all those visits it was very warm, very humid, cloudy and rainy with a couple of days of acqua alta. But who knows? Venice is wonderful no matter what the weather.

My wife and I were in Venice this October and the weather was wonderful! Spring like (USA)and no rain. Of course they have been in a drought! One of the best cities we have ever visited!

When I was there in October there was no rain at all. The day was warm (in the mid 70's F) with cool nights.

I want to second what suec1 said: Venice is wonderful even if the weather is not. We just returned from a week in Italy. It rained every day we were in Florence, SNOWED Sunday en route to Venice. Monday was quite cold (-3C); St. Mark's square was covered in ice and packed snow. Who cared? We'd go back in a minute.
