Venice in May

We are planning a trip to Venice in May, 2000. Looking for a nice hotel, not too fancy, reasonable price and some suggestions on restaurants. Would be nice to be near the Piazza San Marco but hotels there would prob. be too costly. Great to hear some experiences. Thanks.

Sorry that was May, 2001.

What is the big deal with staying near the Piazza San Marco? Everything in that area is touristy and OVERPRICED! The real Venice is not at San Marco. You must walk, walk, walk away from there.

That said, try La Fenice (which is not too far from San Marco). When booking, be sure to ask for a room with a BIG bathroom windows. The corner rooms are larget than others. Also, there are some rooms on the top floor that have little terraces. They are really charming, with their views of Venetian rooftops.

Here's a restaurant recommendation: Take the #82 vaporetto to Zaterre (or walk there from the Accademia). There, facing you , is the Ristorante Pizzeria Gianni. They have the best pizza I have ever put in my nouth! Actually, everything is good there.

Anne
I disagree with the above. Not everything close to San Marco is overpriced in my opinion, and I loved the convenience of staying in that area.
I agree that there are other neighborhoods in Venice to explore that cater less to tourists and more to
"real life", including shops and restaurants that are more interesting and less expensive.
I have a file on Venice; if you'd like to see it, email me.

Dear Anne:

We are staying at the Galleria Hotel for $81/night in May 2001. Our room overlooks the grand canal and is in walking distance of everything. If that doesn't suit you, do a key word search on "venice" - we found a lot of good advice already on this forum. I think you'll be very suprised at how much info you can find that people have already posted. There are also a number of websites you can try, but we always like to hear about hotels first hand from those who've stayed in them.

Enjoy your trip!

Stephanie
