curious as to weather, are there still outdoor orchestras and can you sit in the plaza or to late and too cold. flooding already or not? still crowds?

I was in Venice in October in 2000 and the weather was beautiful. You can go to weather.com and look up the average temps and rainfall for that month.

We experienced no rain or high-water during that time, but there's never any guarantees.

Oh, and yes, there were outdoor orchestras in Piazza San Marco and the crowds were less than the summer crowds.

We arrived in Venice Oct. 21 and the weather was actually better than I expected. I think we ate all out lunches outdoors and maybe one or two dinners. I think the next week the rain and aqua alta hit. By then we were down in Rome where the weather was WARM and I did not have clothes to be cool enough in. Midday walking and I was "glowing" profusely. I think we were lucky with the rain factor especially in Venice - I had packed some plastic bags to use as "boots" if necessary - how tacky! but ended up using them for my dirty laundry from Rome. Last time we were in Venice, in October 2004, there were orchestras playing outdoors. They quit early if the evening was cold, and the waiters at the cafes did not like serving at the outdoor tables when it was chilly. We had several glorious days, where we spent the better part of the afternoon sitting in the sunshine, sipping wine and watching tourists play with the pigeons in Piazza San Marco.
