I visited Venice and Florence for New Years. I got to Venice on the 29th, stayed there through the morning of the 1st, spent the 1st-4th in Florence then back to Venice for a few days.
I actually lucked out with the weather. Almost completely sunny the whole time. Venice was nippy, but not too bad. The sun & blue skies really helped. (it did get colder at night - but I do not think below 40)
Florence was GLORIOUS. shirt sleeve weather, except for one day when it started raining at lunchtime & cont'd all the way back to Venice (I left that day). The following day in Venice was damp & foggy - but that made it kinda cool.
so it is the luck of the draw. I usually luck out, myself.

oh yeah:
NO CROWDS. or, rather small.
I walked right in to see David - no line at all.
Same thing with the museums in Venice.
There were no lines for churches, etc. etc.
I DID write a trip report. It is 90% done (and I never posted it - to some friend's chagrin).
I can email you the 90% that is done. (or anyone else actually).
I will, I will finish it. and post it before New Years.
I am sooooo LAZY.

A friend of mine goes to Venice almost yearly in Jan. , it's her favorite time, in spite of the cold, damp, and drizzle,. She says the stillness and the certain light more than makes up for weather discomforts. The people are more welcoming after a few monthe rest from the crowds, and the whole city is different. This might not be the best time to go if you've never been before, but when she speaks of it I want to run out and buy tickets.
