Venice hotels
I added this to end of another posters post and didn't get any results yet. So I thought I'd repost here
We are also looking for the right place to stay. We need a room for one night, the Friday night before we get on a cruise ship on saturday. We will be arriving at 9:30 at the international airport (VCE)with luggage for two weeks to lug. Where would you stay? Help!!! |
Hi Jude - Is that 9.30 a.m? Are you planning to spend the day visiting Venice?
If yes, the best compromise would probably be to stay in one of the hotels near Piazzale Roma - so you would be close to the port for next morning. If you don't wish to visit Venice, you could just as well stay in Mestre - or near the airport - and just get a taxi to the port next day. Steve |
These hotels are near Piazzale Roma:
http://www.hotelsantachiara.it/ http://hotelarlecchino.com/ http://www.cadoge.it/ http://www.residenzaparisi.com/ You might find this link useful for other hotels in that area: http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/...nal-hotels.htm You can reach the port from Piazzale Roma by taxi or shuttle bus. For info re the shuttle bus go to: http://www.vtp.it/pages/comeRaggiung...ociere.jsp?n=0 ..... Alternatively, hotels in Mestre convenient for a taxi to the port (- 10 mins) include: Hotel Tritone http://www.hoteltritonevenice.com/ Hotel Plaza http://www.hotelplazavenice.com/ Hotel Bologna (Best Western) http://hotelbologna.com/ ..... Both Piazzale Roma and Mestre can be reached cheaply from the airport by regular Airport Shuttle Bus (- deps. every 20-30 mins; fare: € 3). Alternatively the going rate for a taxi is € 30-35 approx. Hope this helps ... Steve P.S. If you prefer cheaper hotel options, they can be found in Mestre. |
Thank you so much. We actually arrive 9:30 am and then don't have to be on the ship until late afternoon the next day and then we stay in Venice overnight and depart at 6PM Sun evening. So we really have almost 3 full days in Venice. I'll check out the hotel websites you suggested. Thanks so much. I really didn't even know where the port actually is or what was close to it. Pizzale Roma seems like just the spot for convenience. Thanks again, Judy

As you have more time than I first understood, I would stay somewhere more centrally located.
Consider the Hotel Ala, which is one of my favorites. They have their own boat landing, and are very close to the vaporetto stop. Very easy with luggage, but easier on the water taxi. You don't mention budget or time of year. That would help. I don't really think the Piazzale Roma area the best, but if luggage is your main concern I guess it is OK. There are parts of Dorsoduro that are very close to the cruise ship port. Lots of people here love la Calcina, on the Zattere in Dorsoduro. You could do a search and read a lot about it. |
we had a couple of good stays at the Hotel Olimpia (connected with Arlecchino, I believe) which is across one small bridge from the Piazzale Roma where the airport buses come in, yet you would never know it - you are in Venice. Its quiet and very convenient for touring - walk the other way, across another bridge, and you are in the midst of Santa Croce, within 10 in of Campo Santa Margherita, the Frari, etc. Navigation is easy since you can (if you want) just follow the signs to the Piazzale Roma or the people flow to get home again. You can walk about anywhere in Venice easily from here or catch one of the boats at the Piazzale Roma.

Thanks for the posts. We are going Apr. 25th, so I have plenty of time to figure all of this out. Budget is a concern especially with the dollar being so devalued. We are use to staying at Best Westerns for $89 a night. Of course cities are more expensive but I was hoping to spend no more than $200 a night, but what I have been seeing are 200 euros which right now is 340 a night. Wow! Often the website seem low enight but when I check the availability and rate it is usually much higher. I was thinking about checking out a convent. Has anyone done that? I have seen a couple of websites that look interesting. Thanks. I may have to just bite the bullet and pay what the market bears.

It's hard to get around the fact that hotels in Venice are very expensive.

Hi Jude,
We left on a cruise out of Venice last year. With all that luggage (the same that we had) make sure that your hotel can be accessed by a water taxi or something similar. Otherwise, you will be lugging everything up and down stairs and through narrow calles. We stayed at Locando Orseolo and loved it but I don't know if it is in your budget given the dollar today. Have a wonderful cruise. |
Jude - There are lots of cheaper hotels if you don't mind staying in Mestre.
Most people prefer to stay in Venice proper, it's true - but just for one night it doesn't make much difference. There are frequent trains from Mestre into Venice (- 5 mins) for your sightseeing day. Then next day it's a 10 mins taxi ride from Mestre to the port. A convenient option with luggage ... I stayed at a small hotel near Mestre (- on the airport-Mestre bus route) for € 50 a few months ago, and plan to use it again. Steve |
