Venice hotels

In Venice for four nights a fortnight hence. Trying to decide among three (3-star) hotels:
1. Abbazia-former monastery, great aesthetic, LARGE rooms, great price, BUT near train station. How is this area for staying.
2. Bisanzio-16th C bldg., good aesthetics, just off the Rive degli Schiavoni 5 or 10 min. from San Marco.
3. Ai Due Fanali-in St. Croce, maybe 20 min. north of San Marco. Comparably priced with Bisanzio, not that much more than Abbazia.

Anyone stayed at any of these. I’m not a night-life person, but I do want to eat well, go to the islands, see San Marco, walk along the canal and not dread or feel cramped at my hotel.

Check out the Accademia in Dorsoduro. Charming, quiet...a real find. Enjoy Venice...it is wonderful.

I could not agree more with Karie--we stayed at the Accademia for 4 nights this past June and had the most wonderful time in Venice-- the hotel is located right around the corner from the Accademia Bridge (one of only 3 bridges crossing the grand canal) and the Accademia Bridge. The hotel is a nice quiet neighborhood but is less than a ten minute walk from St. Mark's. There are some great restaurants close by and the staff are wonderful. The only draw back is that you have to make your reservations early as the hotel is one of the most popular places in the city! Have a great trip! Hans

I just returned from Italy 2 weeks ago and stayed at Bisanzio. It was a beautiful room for three of us and it was less than 10 min to the Piazza San Marco.
I was only in Venice for a day and 1/2 and did not have great food. I can however pass on some recommended retaurants that I did not have a chance to try: Vino Vino located on Calle del Sartor di Veste, San Marco 2007/A; Bistro de Venice, San Marco; and Paradiso Perduto-not usre of that location. I will try these when I go back, if you do please drop a line.

We stayed at the 3 star Locanda Sturion with a super grand canal and Rialto view. Cost was 550,000 for 4 people. Wonderful hotel - lots of steps to climb. Website: http://www.sayville.com/sturionus.html

To KARI and to HANS
Thanks for the recommendation of the Academia. Was first choice, but they are booked. (Anyone traveling to Venice, book this one EARLY.)

We stayed at the Bisanzio a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. It is family run and the staff is most helpful. We were there for 3 nights and each night they recommended a different restaurant to us and they were all 3 very good. The hotel's location is good close to lots of points of interest, but in a quiet area.

To Don and others...keep trying. I faxed three times before finally getting in, and then was given a superb room when I arrived. (I had asked to be moved to a garden room if one became available.) A delight.

I make about 14 business trips per year to Venice, and always stay at the hotel Michaelangelo in Mestre. Mestre is on the mainland across from Venice, and the hotel in located in the town centre. Buses to Venice are frequent and cheap, and leave you at the Plaza del Roma, where you can get the vaporetto through Venice. Also in Maestre, is a fantastic restaurant, La Pergola. It's an Oestria, and far, far better in quality and price than the tourist fare shoveled out in Venice. As a backup for another great restaurant in Maesta try the Restaurante Dante. Other than a few US ex-pats working at Venice airport, both restaurants are completely missed by tourists. Enjoy!
