Venice Hotels
I need a recommendation please!
Has anyone stayed recently at the Danieli in Venice? I'm going in September and was wondering if it's worth the 700-800 Euro a night for a Double Lagoon View room; or would it be better for nicer room/view from a less expensive hotel than the Danieli. I was thinking the Metropole or Mannin. Cost vs Quality. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Regards, Randy |
We stayed at the Danieli last year, and it was nice, but ... I'd probably look at other options. We thought it was a little threadbare, rather stuffy and wildly overpriced. (Great location though). I can't comment on the Metropole or Mannin, I'm afraid. We were in Venice again in January, and checked out the Monaco and Grand Canal - they were in mid-renovation, but it looked pretty great (and the people were very friendly). Might be worth a look.

From 700-800 euro/night and it's threadbare? That's more than overpriced!

We stayed at the Metropole 4 years ago in July and loved it. The rooms are not too spacious, which is not unusual for Venice, but the charm of the room and the hotel in general was most appreciated. Lovely lobby, sitting area, great location, and bountiful breakfasts. Only complaint- the outdoor restaurant at the hotel, where we had lunch upon our arrival was a rip-off. Worth checking out, for sure.

I cannot overstate our satisfaction with the San Clemente Palace Hotel. It's located on its own private island approx. 12 minutes from San Marco. The hotel's 2 boats run back forth so it is truly not inconvenient. The rooms are large, well-appointed and many offer stunning views of Venice. Throw in a heated swimming pool, spa, putting greens, jogging path, superb staff, delicious breakfast buffet...it's a 5-star hotel and would probably cost you 1/2 of the Danieli rates.(In March 2004, we paid 175 euros per night.) In our two trips to Venice we have stayed at the Gritti Palace and now most recently San Clemente Palace. If we am so fortunate to return to Venice, there is only one hotel for us...SCP.

rbackich- We are also going to Venice the first week of October and I inquired about the Danieli. My travel agent, who basically deals in upscale property, told us that the Danieli was a little "worn" and suggested that we stay at either the Luna Baglioni or the Il Palazzo at the Bauer. We are spending 473E at the Luna Baglioni (through a Virtuoso hotel rate) and we have breakfast included each day. This virtuoso rate also allows us a free upgrade if one is available. This is for what they call their autumn moon promotion. Friends of ours just came back after having stayed at the Luna and loved it. Their room was not even in as high a category as ours and they said it was fabulous. They just redid this hotel, also. I don't know if this helps but it seems you also like to stay in luxury accommodations. We live in the U. S. and always stay in a Ritz or Four Seasons or The Penisula. However, it just did not seem to justify spending that kind of money in Venice. We were told that spending 473E (Approx. $556.00 US) would guarantee us a great room at the Luna (with a view of the canal) and we would not be disappointed. However, if you still want to spend the 700-800E, check out the Il Palazzo. Supposed to be magnificient with a great location. Just don't confuse the Il Palazzo at the Bauer with The Bauer. They are two different hotels.

We were very happy with the Pensione Accademia in Venice on our first family trip to Italy in June. Would definitely stay there again. Garden view is nice and quiet; hotel is on a smaller canal just off the Grand Canal so you don't need a canal view. It's a charming, spotlessly clean 3-star hotel with comfty beds and a nice breakfast in the dorsoduro area of Venice, just a 2-minute vaporetto ride from San Marco. EEek! Don't pay 800 for 1 night! You can get 2 or 3 rooms at the Pensione Accademia for that price!

I would consider any lodging that cost 700-800 euro a night overpriced.

I've stayed at the Metropole several times and have always enjoyed it. But in fact, it's overpriced just as are most of the top hotels. Any more, I choose to stay in a good 3 star, of which there are dozens in Venice. However, if you want a nice atmosphere, good service, a great breakfast, and the possibility of a room overlooking the lagoon, the Metropole is a good choice. And as for the luncheon buffet that one person didn't like, I have to take issue with that opinion. Go to the buffet hungry and expect to pay a pretty hefty price, but eat as much and as long as you want. I usually go without much dinner the night before, and only a small roll and cup of coffee for breakfast, and then I can do justice to the luncheon buffet. The food has always been excellent, and there are more choices than you can possibly eat. To me, it's better than a nice dinner out.
